PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - This is the season to make sure that your dog is protected from fleas.
If your dog does have fleas, first and foremost get to the vet to rid your dog of them as soon as possible. There is a prescription medication that your vet can prescribe to rid your dog of the pests in as little as thirty minutes to a couple of hours.
You also need to check to see if your dog is allergic to the bites and to make sure that there isn?t a secondary infection due to the subsequent intensive itching, or chewing. Then make sure to protect your infected dog and also every animal in the household, including your cats, with flea protection. Because fleas appeared on one of your pets, you must assume that all are now susceptible and at risk. They need to be on the protection for three cycles or three months.
Remember, however, that some flea medications cannot be used on or even near cats. Ask your vet and use only the safe and appropriate ones for both dogs and cats.
Launder all the bedding areas and the pet bedding in hot or warm water. Vacuum all areas twice a day for a few days and eliminate the vacuum bag and its contents immediately. If mothballs are used in the vacuum to help eliminate the fleas, use in the vacuum ONLY and carefully dispose of the bag immediately after vacuuming. Never expose your companion animals to them at all since the fumes are extremely toxic and can cause severe respiratory sickness or even death.
