The President and Mrs. Obama have jumped on a culinary trend that is hot all around the country: home-brewed beer. There are currently three beers brewed in the White House: White House Honey Ale, White House Honey Blonde Ale, and White House Honey Porter. The honey used in all three beers comes from the beehives in Michelle Obama?s garden. The President purchased his beer brewing equipment with personal funds. Home-brewing history nerds take note: according to White House curator Bill Allman, this is the first time in US history that home-brewed beer has been made at the White House.?
The President did not do the brewing himself. That task was passed on to the White House chefs, which makes sense; home-brewing can be a time-consuming hobby, and I?m guessing that being leader of the free world doesn?t leave a lot of time left over for hobbies in general. Much as I looked, I can't find a review of the beer. The White House Spokesman, who'd had the blonde ale said that it was pleasant, but that he doesn't know much about beer, and really seemed to want the interviewer to stop asking questions about it already.?
The home-brewed beer was what the President served when he drank a beer with 23-year-old Marine veteran Dakota Miller. When Obama called Miller to congratulate him on his Medal of Honor, the Marine asked if the pres would have a beer with him. Obama obliged, and they drank a couple of White House Honey Blondes together. The home-brew made its debut at the White Super Bowl party in 2011. Between 80 and 100 bottles were made, complete with specially printed labels. Those bottles beg a question: if you were handed a bottle of White House ale, would you drink it, or save that as a collector?s item?
