#HashOut On Location: What was your favorite moment during the RNC?

Four days in a row of walking and talking and sweating, and we've made it to the end of the "HashOut On Location" coverage of the RNC. We've been on location at a diner, the Convention Center, the Tampa Bay Times Forum, the Huffington Post spa, the street and even the escalator. I'm tired, y'all. There are only so many days a person go through airport-level security multiple times a day and subsist on half-eaten energy bars discovered in his backpack.

Today we took a look back and asked people to share their favorite convention moments. We got to talk to Geraldo Rivera and Roland Martin and even some of the staff at the Tampa Bay Times Forum. I was surprised to learn that there's an entire part of running this convention that involves allocating radio spectrum to news organizations: too many voices and not enough space. I also heard from convention veterans that the supply of weird buttons and crazy hats is far lower this year than in previous conventions.

We also took a look back at some my favorite moments, including the personalities, Ross The Intern and Bunky Hall. The best overall interaction came when a woman who asked me how I, as a man, could know what a woman wanted. "I ask," I told her. It blew her mind.

Thank you all for checking out the series, and thanks to the people you didn't see on camera, including "HashOut On Location" producers Charity Elder and Mia Trovato and our director of photography Victor Velazquez. I'll miss you all this weekend but look forward to asking more questions at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte next week.

Until then, keep answering the questions at the Yahoo News Twitter account, @YahooNews.

Compound discovered that boosts effect of vaccines against HIV and flu

Monday, August 27, 2012

Oxford University scientists have discovered a compound that greatly boosts the effect of vaccines against viruses like flu, HIV and herpes in mice.

An 'adjuvant' is a substance added to a vaccine to enhance the immune response and offer better protection against infection.

The Oxford University team, along with Swedish and US colleagues, have shown that a type of polymer called polyethyleneimine (PEI) is a potent adjuvant for test vaccines against HIV, flu and herpes when given in mice.

The researchers were part-funded by the UK Medical Research Council and report their findings in the journal Nature Biotechnology.

Mice given a single dose of a flu vaccine including PEI via a nasal droplet were completely protected against a lethal dose of flu. This was a marked improvement over mice given the flu vaccine without an adjuvant or in formulations with other adjuvants.

The Oxford researchers now intend to test the PEI adjuvant in ferrets, a better animal model for studying flu. They also want to understand how long the protection lasts for. It is likely to be a couple of years before a flu vaccine using the adjuvant could be tested in clinical trials in humans, the researchers say.

'Gaining complete protection against flu from just one immunisation is pretty unheard of, even in a study in mice,' says Professor Quentin Sattentau of the Dunn School of Pathology at Oxford University, who led the work. 'This gives us confidence that PEI has the potential to be a potent adjuvant for vaccines against viruses like flu or HIV, though there are many steps ahead if it is ever to be used in humans.'

HIV, flu and herpes are some of the most difficult targets to develop vaccines against. HIV and flu viruses are able to change and evolve to escape immune responses stimulated by vaccines. There aren't any effective vaccines against HIV and herpes as yet, and the flu vaccine needs reformulating each year and doesn't offer complete protection to everyone who receives it. Finding better adjuvants could help in developing more effective vaccines against these diseases.

Most vaccines include an adjuvant. The main ingredient of the vaccine ? whether it is a dead or disabled pathogen, or just a part of the virus or bacteria causing the disease ? primes the body's immune system so it knows what to attack in case of infection. But the adjuvant is needed as well to stimulate this process.

While the need for adjuvants in vaccines has been recognised for nearly 100 years, the way adjuvants work has only recently been understood. The result has been that only a small set of adjuvants is used in current vaccines, often for historical reasons.

The most common adjuvant by far is alum, an aluminium-containing compound that has been given in many different vaccines worldwide for decades. However, alum is not the most potent adjuvant for many vaccine designs.

'There is a need to develop new adjuvants to get the most appropriate immune response from vaccines,' says Professor Sattentau, who is also a James Martin Senior Fellow at the Oxford Martin School, University of Oxford.

The Oxford University team found that PEI, a standard polymer often used in genetic and cell biology, has strong adjuvant activity.

When included in a vaccine with a protein from HIV, flu or herpes virus, mice subsequently mounted a strong immune response against that virus. The immune response was stronger than with other adjuvants that are currently being investigated.

The team also showed that PEI is a potent adjuvant in rabbits, showing the effect is not just specific to mice and could be general.

Another potential advantage of PEI is that it works well as an adjuvant for 'mucosal vaccines'. These vaccines are taken up the nose or in the mouth and absorbed through the mucus-lined tissues there, getting rid of any pain and anxiety from a needle. Mucosal vaccines may also be better in some ways as mucosal tissues are the sites of infection for these diseases (airways for respiratory diseases, genital mucosa for HIV and herpes).

Professor Sattentau suggests that: 'In the best of all possible worlds, you could imagine people would have one dose of flu vaccine that they'd just sniff up their nose or put under their tongue. And that would be it: no injections and they'd be protected from flu for a number of years.

'It's just a vision for the future at the moment, but this promising adjuvant suggests it is a vision that is at least possible.'

Golden Hawk Athletics & Recreation - Men's baseball wraps up ...

Men's baseball wraps up training camp

WATERLOO, Ont. (August 27, 2012) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's baseball team wrapped up its five day training camp with an intersquad game on Sunday afternoon at Jack Couch Park in Kitchener. The game was a highly competitive and spirited affair as the coaching staff used it as a final evaluation before selecting the team that will compete for an OUA Championship.

Team Purple edged out Team Gold by an 8-7 score as players on both teams worked hard to earn a spot on the team. Team Purple was lead by 1B Andrew Czuchnicki and RF Alex Kupchak who each had a hit and 2 RBI. 1B Ian Filion, C Riley Robinson, C Ryan Belz and 2B Jeff Slasor also had hits. Veteran pitchers Brett van Pelt, Adam McBride and Greg Greenberg each worked a scoreless inning a piece for the winners. ?

Team Gold was led by 2011 OUA Rookie of the Year, CF Jon Brouse as Brouse was 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI, picking up right where he left off last season. Freshmen RF Philip Warner and 3B Brandon Washkevich each picked up two hits with C Adam Chong, LF McKenzie Maxwell and transfer SS Colin McKeen added a hit each. Veteran pitchers Justin Newbold, Andrew Ziedins, McKenzie Maxwell and Ian Filion all worked scoreless innings and freshman Zachary Danilewitz also looked strong with a scoreless inning of work.

This game wrapped up the fifth and final day of an extremely competitive training camp and the coaching staff selected the final 30 man roster, with five red shirts, that will make up the 2012 edition of the Golden Hawks.

"The coaching staff was thrilled at how competitive this training camp was," commented Head Coach Scott Ballantyne. "We had to release some very good ball players and that is never easy, but I am looking forward to this season and moving forward with the group of student-athletes that we have. We feel we have the pitching depth that is necessary to compete for a championship and if we can play good defence and continue to work on the fundamental aspects of the game, I think we'll score enough runs to be right in the mix with the top teams in the OUA."

The Golden Hawks will begin an exhibition schedule on Tuesday that will see them travel to St. Mary's to play two games against the Ontario Terriers U18 team and the University of Windsor Lancers at the beautiful ball park on the grounds of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame. The week will culminate with the Golden Hawks travelling to St. Catharines on Labour Day weekend to defend their Championship at the Brock Invitational tournament.

Syria refugee exodus swells as fighting heats up

The number of refugees fleeing civil war in Syria has surged to more than 200,000, the UN said on Friday, as fighter jets and tanks reportedly unleashed deadly new raids in hotspots across the country.

The new international envoy Lakhdar Brahimi held talks with UN leaders, pledging: "We will not spare any effort" but saying he was "scared" about the scale of the task confronting him.

Western powers are focused on tightening the screws on President Bashar al-Assad while the 17-month conflict grinds on with neither government forces nor rebels able to claim decisive battlefield gains.

Syrian deputy foreign minister Faisal Muqdad said Thursday that Damascus was ready to work with Brahimi and voiced hope he could pave the way for "national dialogue," after another minister said this week the regime was "ready to discuss" Assad's departure as part of any negotiated solution.

Syria's only regional ally Iran said it will submit a proposal for ending the conflict at a Non-Aligned Movement summit next week, saying it included "all parties" but giving no further details.

World powers are divided over how to end a conflict that is also heightening tensions in neighbouring nations, and demonstrators who took to the streets after weekly Muslim prayers protested at the lack of international action.

"The world disgusts us," chanted protesters in Daraa, birthplace of the revolt that began with peaceful protests against the regime in March 2011.

The West is nevertheless ramping up the pressure, with Washington and London threatening possible action if Damascus uses its chemical weapons although Moscow has told them not to meddle in Syria's internal affairs.

France said it backed a partial no-fly zone over Syria, where the regime is intensifying its attacks from the air as it battles to stamp out rebel strongholds in Aleppo and pockets of resistance in the capital Damascus.

France and Germany said they are pushing for Security Council action on the humanitarian crisis gripping much of the country, where the UN says over one million are homeless and 2.5 million in need of help.

The UN refugee agency said the flow of refugees fleeing the fighting had jumped, with 202,500 people registering in neighbouring countries.

"A record 2,324 Syrian refugees crossed into Jordan on Thursday night," the kingdom's Information Minister Samih Maaytah said in Amman.

Lebanon was rattled again by new fighting between rival pro-and anti-Assad communities in the northern city of Tripoli, with 14 people killed since Monday, stoking fears of a spillover of the Syria conflict.

Warplanes and artillery again pounded the northern hub of Aleppo and several other areas, a watchdog said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said August is already the deadliest single month of the conflict with more than 4,000 people killed in barely three weeks, and an overall death toll of around 24,500.

In the day's bloodiest single attack, 21 people including 12 women and a child were killed in an air and artillery strike in Mayadin that levelled at least one residential building, Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.

Al-Ikhbariya, a government satellite channel, said security forces were "engaged in combat with an armed terrorist group in the Mayadin region, killing dozens of terrorists."

In all 130 people were killed nationwide, according to the Observatory, which has a network of activists, doctors and other sources on the ground but whose information cannot be independently confirmed.

It also reported heavy shelling on several districts of Aleppo, scene of the fiercest fighting since the conflict first entangled the commercial hub a month ago, as well as Daraa, the northwestern province of Idlib and Hama in the centre.

The opposition Syrian National Council warned of a "humanitarian catastrophe" in the central city of Homs, saying it had been under siege for 80 days and was in desperate need of food and medical supplies.

Rebels said they were digging in for a war of attrition in Aleppo, where the regime had warned last month of "the mother of all battles."

"We don't have enough weapons, they (the Syrian army) don't have enough men," said one rebel fighter calling himself Abu Haidar.

Both the government and opposition forces say attacks on Aleppo province are aimed at cutting arms supply routes to the rebels in Syria's battered second city.

Rebels claimed earlier this week to control 60 percent of Aleppo but the regime has dismissed the claims and said Thursday the army had recaptured three Christian neighbourhoods, where residents are largely pro-Assad.

Meanwhile, 50 unidentified bodies were found in the past 24 hours, mainly in Aleppo and Damascus, the Observatory said. Most were found with their hands bound and shot in the head.

Activists said troops stormed and shelled several areas south of Damascus, after two days of ferocious assaults on the southern outskirts that activists said was a renewed bid to crush the insurgency in the capital "once and for all."

The Local Coordination Committees, a local activist network, meanwhile said prominent Syrian film producer Orwa Nyrabia disappeared and was feared arrested, but its report could not be confirmed independently.

American freelance journalist Austin Tice has also been missing for more than a week, his latest employer the Washington Post said.

BOOK REVIEW : The West, the Gulf and China: An oil-fueled triangle

BOOK REVIEW
West, the Gulf and China in an oil-fueled triangle
China and the Persian Gulf,
edited by Bryce Wakefield and Susan Levenstein

Reviewed by Giorgio Cafiero

China's rise, according to many analysts, has been the world's most significant geopolitical and economic development of the 21st century. Central to China's rise has been the energy it needs to fuel economic growth. Importing more than 42% of its crude oil from the Persian Gulf, Beijing views that region as vital for this economic development. China's growing influence in the world's most oil-rich region is the subject of Bryce Wakefield's and Susan Levenstein's China and the Persian Gulf: Implications for the United States.

The contributors - edited by Wilson Center program associate

?

Wakefield and program assistant Susan L. Levenstein - pay particular attention to China's relations with Saudi Arabia, Iran and Iraq. Since 2002, Saudi Arabia has been China's top supplier of crude oil, currently supplying more than one-fifth of its needs; China has replaced the United States as Saudi Arabia's top export partner.

The bilateral relationship between Beijing and Riyadh is valued economically and politically in both capitals. According to Erica Downs in her essay in the volume, US demand for oil is expected to decrease over the next 15 years, while China's is expected to reach 16.3 million barrels per day by 2030, constituting more than two-fifths of the global increase in demand for petroleum.

Therefore, Saudi Arabia is convinced that China is the most reliable partner for "security of demand". Moreover, in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, complications in US-Saudi relations, in particular the West's criticism of Saudi Arabia's human-rights record, have made closer ties with China more appealing.

Sino-Iranian ties are delicate, largely because of Beijing's perception of Iran as "a tempting but tough place to do business", writes Downs. Iran is China's third-largest supplier of crude oil, and the Islamic Republic's oil and gas fields, which are open to foreign investment, do attract Chinese oil firms. However, Downs concludes that Western-imposed sanctions on Iran have pressured China to act cautiously when assessing the value of its ties to Iran as compared with Saudi Arabia. From Tehran's perspective, there is much incentive to lure China's oil companies into Iran to demonstrate the Western-imposed sanctions' ineffectiveness.

China, like the West, does not want to see Iran develop a nuclear weapon. Nonetheless, Beijing is suspicious of the real US and European interests in Iran and has therefore not cooperated with Western efforts to isolate Tehran.

China sees Iraq and its 115 billion barrels of proven oil reserves as a "land of opportunity", according to Downs. Iraq is planning a major expansion of its oil production, and its oil ministry has offered three of 11 major contracts to Chinese companies. Afshin Molavi labels China an "unlikely winner" of Washington's 2003 invasion of Iraq. A joint partnership between China National Petroleum Corp and British Petroleum over the enormous Rumaila oilfield has the potential to make Iraq China's new top supplier of crude oil within eight years, surpassing Saudi Arabia and Iran.

Jon Alterman believes that interdependency defines the triangular relationship of the United States, China and the Persian Gulf. The United States Pacific Command (PACOM) is the largest US command, and it focuses on China. However, US-China trade is the second-largest in the world, and China possesses leverage over America's economy, holding almost US$1 trillion in US debt.

US-Gulf relations are largely security-oriented, as Washington sells billions of dollars of arms to the region's governments each year and has established military bases in all Gulf Cooperation Council countries, save Saudi Arabia (the others being the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Quatar and Kuwait.

Last, Sino-Gulf relationships are defined primarily by Middle Eastern demand for Chinese construction and manufactured goods and China's thirst for the Gulf's non-renewable natural resources.

China and the Gulf states can't force the United States out of the Persian Gulf, nor can the United States and Gulf states remove China. At the same time, Washington and Beijing are not positioned to squeeze the Middle Eastern oil producers, as the global economy is far too reliant on Persian Gulf oil. Alterman concludes that the three actors share a mutual interest in maintaining stability in the Gulf and continuing the free flow of energy. Washington's "goal should not be to deny the triangle", he writes, "but instead to embrace it".

The contributors to China and the Persian Gulf concur that China is increasingly important to the Gulf states and vice versa. Moreover, Beijing has replaced the ideological foreign-policy pursuits of the Mao Zedong era with self-calculating, shrewd, and cautious strategies.

Although it does not seek to rival the United States as the region's dominant military power, China may take advantage of US dilemmas in the region to pursue its own agenda by evading US-imposed sanctions and directly dealing with energy-rich states that the United States seeks to isolate, such as Iran, to acquire valuable assets and play spoiler. In this inescapable triangle, China, the United States and the Persian Gulf are all in tension, but in the end they all need each other, too.

China and the Persian Gulf, Implications for the United States, ed Bryce Wakefield and Susan Levenstein, is published by the Wilson Center, Washington DC. Send an email to asia@wilsoncenter.org for a free copy or click here for a free PDF version.

Personal Finance Management: Some Helpful Tips And Advice ...

Dealing with your personal finances can be stressful and difficult. With a little knowledge, though, it does not have to be overwhelming. In this article, you will be provided with some information on how to best deal with your personal financial matters.

You should have at least three months? salary in this account. Use the first ten percent you pay and then place that into a high-yield savings account.

TIP! Instead of using a single maxed-out credit card, aim to use two or even more cards. The interest from multiple credit cards is typically lower than a single card that is maxed out.

When you have a lucrative month and start to get your head above water, this is the time to sock some money away rather than spending more. Don?t do this; stick to your budget so that you will be less likely to have money problems in the future.

Cfl Bulbs

Get rid of old-style incandescent bulbs, and replace them with energy-efficient CFL bulbs. If you replace these older bulbs, you should notice lowered energy bills and a reduced carbon footprint. CFL bulbs also last much longer than traditional light bulbs. Also, you will be saving money by not having to constantly buy new bulbs.

TIP! If you need to cut down on your monthly expenditures, consider doing away with your cell phone service. Although this sounds like a tough situation to put yourself in, you can live without one.

It?s true that you need to repay debt as quickly as possible, but in some cases, retaining liquid assets instead of using them to pay down debt can be the smart thing to do. When you think about how much you want to save back, you need to think about what may cost you a lot of money. This can be a medical problem or maybe something like a car or house fix that must be done.

Credit Score

Work to keep your credit rating as high as possible. Your interest on loans or credit cards are directly related to your credit score. A certain minimum credit score is also a necessity if you want to rent a home, get utilities hooked up, or even just buy a cell phone plan. Be smart about using your credit so your scores can remain high.

TIP! Depending on the situation, it may be best to allow your money to sit on one exchange for longer than you might think. Use this technique wisely, however, and do not allow greed to control your decisions.

On the day prior to payday, give yourself an ?allowance? for the weekend. Once you get paid, just let the money be direct deposited and don?t take any of it out. Doing this will ensure that the money is all there on Monday, when you may be far more likely to exercise greater discipline.

If you need to cut down on your monthly expenditures, consider doing away with your cell phone service. Most people do not like this suggestion, but years ago, no one had cell phones and they all managed to survive. A cell phone is a convenience ? not a necessity. If nothing else, examine your bills and determine whether you could limit your monthly expenses by selecting a less expensive plan.

To eliminate the most debt quickly, pay off credit card debt first. You may want to pay all debts equally, but those with a higher interest rate should be paid off first to avoid accruing more debt. Many economists expect credit card interest rates to continue climbing in the near future, so this step is critical.

You can save money by eliminating fast food stops for convenience. Creating meals at home can save you hundreds of dollars every month.

Confide in friends about your current financial situation. This will make it a little easier on you when people invite you to go out because they?ll know you can?t pay for it. If you do not tell them why you could not buy a gift or go on a trip, your friends might think that it is due to something they have done. Find cheaper ways to have fun together and share your financial problems with them.

You should not borrow any money or open any credit lines unless you have to! While credit may be necessary at times, you will be happier if you are without debt and save money for those larger purchases that come along. You will likely be forced to get a loan to purchase a house and a car.

TIP! If a credit repair company guarantees a better credit score, run away screaming. A lot of these companies will try to make a cover-all statement that they can repair your credit.

You read at the start of this article that managing your finances is stressful for most people. Knowing how you can administer your personal affairs will aid in relieving a bit of that burden. The information in the above article is provided to help you understand the steps you can take to improve your financial situation

Super-strong, high-tech material found to be toxic to aquatic animals

ScienceDaily (Aug. 22, 2012) ? Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are some of the strongest materials on Earth and are used to strengthen composite materials, such as those used in high-performance tennis rackets. CNTs have potential uses in everything from medicine to electronics to construction. However, CNTs are not without risks. A joint study by the University of Missouri and United States Geological Survey found that they can be toxic to aquatic animals. The researchers urge that care be taken to prevent the release of CNTs into the environment as the materials enter mass production.

"The great promise of carbon nanotubes must be balanced with caution and preparation," said Baolin Deng, professor and chair of chemical engineering at the University of Missouri. "We don't know enough about their effects on the environment and human health. The EPA and other regulatory groups need more studies like ours to provide information on the safety of CNTs."

CNTs are microscopically thin cylinders of carbon atoms that can be hundreds of millions of times longer than they are wide, but they are not pure carbon. Nickel, chromium and other metals used in the manufacturing process can remain as impurities. Deng and his colleagues found that these metals and the CNTs themselves can reduce the growth rates or even kill some species of aquatic organisms. The four species used in the experiment were mussels (Villosa iris), small flies' larvae (Chironomus dilutus), worms (Lumbriculus variegatus) and crustaceans (Hyalella azteca).

"One of the greatest possibilities of contamination of the environment by CNTs comes during the manufacture of composite materials," said Hao Li, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at MU. "Good waste management and handling procedures can minimize this risk. Also, to control long-term risks, we need to understand what happens when these composite materials break down."

The study on CNTs toxicity to aquatic animals was a collaboration between engineering faculty and students at MU and U.S. Geological Survey researchers led by Christopher Ingersoll. The first author of the study, Joseph Mwangi, came to the project via a minority student fellowship. The EPA funded the research with a $400,000 grant. The results were published in the journal Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. Baolin Deng is C.W. LaPierre Professor of Civil Engineering in the College of Engineering at the University of Missouri.

Rockford Park District announces Golf Hall of Fame inductees ...

PRESS RELEASE

ROCKFORD, IL ? At a news conference today, the Rockford Park District announced the newest members that will soon be officially welcomed into the Rockford Area Golf Hall of Fame. The following people/groups will be inducted into the 2012 Golf Hall of Fame: Steve Benjamin, John Alastair Robertson, and Tiger Woods Foundation.

In 2005, the Rockford Area Golf Hall of Fame began as a way to recognize, preserve, and promote the heritage of golf in the Rockford area. The Hall of Fame honors the contributions and accomplishments of individuals who are worthy of recognition and are examples for others to emulate. Inductees are selected through careful consideration by screening and selection committees comprised of knowledgeable golf experts representing area groups and organizations, including previous Hall of Fame inductees.

The Golf Hall of Fame Play Day and Induction Ceremony Dinner takes place Monday, September 24, 2012, and is presented by Edward Jones. The event is open to the public.

2012 Golf Hall of Fame Inductees

Steve Benjamin

Steve Benjamin has been a fixture in the Rockford golf scene for decades. He was a member of the 1968 Guilford Vikings golf team that finished second in the Illinois State Championship. In September 2012, the 1968 golf team was inducted in the Guilford High School Hall of Fame. While attending Rock Valley College in 1968?1970, Steve was a member of a conference champion golf team where he qualified for nationals and tied for medalist honors. Steve continued his collegiate career at the University of Northern Colorado, where he was one of the golf team's top five players. The UNC Bears were conference champions, and Steve was team captain. The biggest team victory came in 1972, when the Bears beat the US Air Force Academy for the first time in school history, with a team total of 279 (Steve shot a 79).

In 1973, Steve turned pro and worked as a club professional for the next four years in Colorado and Texas.

In 1977, he assumed the role of head coach for his alma mater, Rock Valley College. Under his guidance, RVC garnered over 60 team victories, including 15 regional championships, and the team advanced to the NJCAA nationals for seven straight years, earning two NJCAA Division III national championships; Steve was named NJCAA Division III National Golf Coach of the Year. Other credentials include four years finishing in second place at the NJCAA Division III National Championships and coaching 20 NJCAA Division III All-Americans.

After receiving his amateur status back, Steve continued his competitive career in Rockford by winning the Ballard Memorial in 1983 and 1986, and the Winnebago County Amateur in 1986. Another highlight was at the 1985 Greater Rockford Men's Golf Classic, when Steve finished one shot behind champion Chris Beto.

John Alastair Robertson

John Robertson first began golfing at age 13, and had a natural ability right from the start. Over the next four years, John played golf nearly every day of the summer with his boyhood best friend, Chris Leighty. Sinnissippi Golf Course was John's home course, and he didn't play another golf course until he was 16.

When John attended East High School, he opted to play football instead of golf, and was also on the wrestling team, where he was captain in his senior year. In the summer, though, golf was his game of choice. After graduation, John started playing pretty regularly, and that was when he was bitten by the "golf bug."

After high school, John worked at Sinnissippi Golf Course as a cashier, enrolled at Rock Valley College for the fall semester, and played golf for two years for Coach Steve Benjamin. After RVC, John attended the University of Iowa, and played in local tournaments during his college days, which garnered him his first win in the 1986 Ledges Invitational.

During John's competitive days, one could find him practicing on the Sandy Hollow Golf Course putting green during his lunch hour or spending hours at Elliot Golf Course driving range working on his game. John was a fixture on the local competitive scene in the late ?80s and early ?90s, winning the Melvin Ballard several times, the Greater Rockford Men's Golf Classic four times, the Ledges Invitational four times, and won several other area golf tournaments. Due to an increased work schedule, John stepped away from golf. Returning to golf in 1997, John won the Prairie View Gold Medal and regained the Ledges title in 2000 and 2001.

In 2006, John and his wife Mary Beth left the Rockford area and moved to Dayton, Ohio, where John accepted a position with GE. John still plays golf regularly, and maintains a scratch handicap. He has played in the Dayton Metro three times over a six-year period. John's best finish is fifth place. Most recently, John returned to the Forest City to participate in the 2012 Gold Medal Classic, where he tied for second place.

Tiger Woods Foundation

It seems like only yesterday the Tiger Woods Foundation (TWF) was first in Rockford, but it has been more than 10 years. The 2001 TWF Clinic and Exhibition generated over $154,000 in grants to area youth golf groups to expand and enhance their golf lesson programs. These grants were restricted for certain use, and no funds were to be allowed to construct any golf facility, but this did not deter golf enthusiasts from starting a fundraising campaign that would lead to the construction of two wonderful facilities - Ingersoll Learning Links, and The First Tee AMCORE Learning Facility at Patriots' Gateway. Both locations helped grow the next generation of golfers.

While the construction campaign was underway, golf programs started to bloom. Through the Tiger Woods Foundation grants, golf was now being taught in Rockford Park District summer playground programs, Kid Zones, and in various Therapeutic Recreation programs. The Golf Services Department expanded their lesson program and hired a PGA Teaching Professional to implement the expanded programs. The RSGA Friday night program was now using PGA Professionals to instruct youth, and Beloit Merrill Community

Center enhanced their golf programs that reach youth at risk. From 2001 to 2004, Rockford Park District youth golf programs increased by 78% with more than 4,600 registrations compared to 2,584 in 2001, thanks to the funds from the Tiger Woods Foundation.

In 2004, the Tiger Woods Foundation returned to Rockford for the TWF "In the City" Festival and Clinic. Funds raised from the 2004 event generated another $40,000 to further enrich golf programs for youth. The Foundation was very impressed with the implementation of the grant program and the development of the Ingersoll Learning Links in 2005, and awarded an additional $18,130 to the Park District in a one-time grant. These funds were earmarked to help the RSGA continue their Friday night youth program, purchase a golf cart to be used exclusively at Ingersoll Learning Links, and $5,000 helped construct the Ingersoll Learning Links gazebo. This is the first and only time in TWF history a construction grant was awarded to a TWF clinic site.

The Tiger Woods Foundation has shown unwavering support for youth golf in the Forest City. The area now boasts two wonderful golf learning facilities that share the great game of golf with more than 1,000 youth participants in programs. More than 3,800 youth also first experience golf through the PGA In-School First Swing program or Rockford Park District summer playground programs.

Keynote Speaker: Wendy Ward

Wendy Ward is a three-time Solheim Cup team member, and four-time LPGA Tournament winner. Her amateur success includes the following events: 1992 Texas State Women's champion, 1994 World Team Amateur champion and medalist, 1994 U.S. Women's Amateur champion, and member of the 1994 U.S. Curtis Cup Team.

Ward played collegiate golf at Arizona State University, where her team was three-time national champion. In 1993, she finished in third place at the NCAA Championship, and was runner-up in 1994-95. Ward also earned First-Team All-America honors from 1993 to 1995. Ward turned professional in 1995 and qualified for the LPGA tour on her first attempt to become a rookie in 1996.

Ward started playing golf at the age of 7 and credits her instructors, parents, and sister Pam for having the most influence on her career. When she's not on the course, she is helping her husband Nate on their 300-acre cattle ranch in Washington, fly fishing, camping, hiking with her dogs, or playing the piano.

NASA finds spiny dinosaur prints at its Maryland campus

Stanford has discovered the footprint of a lumbering, spiny dinosaur called a nodosaur in NASA's own backyard on the Goddard Space Flight Center campus.

At NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, some of the most brilliant minds in the world work to build the spacecraft that humans use to explore their universe. But where space scientists now roam, dinosaurs used to call home, according to dino-hunter Ray Stanford.

Stanford has discovered the footprint of a lumbering, spiny?dinosaur?called a nodosaur in NASA's own backyard on the Goddard Space Flight Center campus. NASA officials aren't disclosing the precise location of the print, fearing that someone might damage or try to remove the fossilized track.

The dinner-plate-sized footprint bears the mark of four dino toes. It belongs to a nodosaur, a tank-like, armored beast studded with bony protuberances that roamed the area about 110 million years ago during the Cretaceous period, which lasted from about 125 million to 65 million years ago. Nodosaurs were plant-eaters, and this one appeared to be moving quickly across the Cretaceous mud, as its heel did not sink deeply into the ground. [See Images of the Ancient Dino-Print]

Stanford, an amateur paleontologist who has had several papers published, confirmed his find with Johns Hopkins University dinosaur expert David Weishampel. On Aug. 17, Stanford shared the location of the find with Goddard officials and with Washington Post reporter Brian Vastag, who made the discovery public the same day.

Stanford also found several?smaller dinosaur footprints?in the area, likely from meat-eating theropods. He called the location "poetic."

"Space scientists may walk along here, and they're walking exactly where this big, bungling heavy-armored dinosaur walked, maybe 110 to 112-million years ago," Stanford told Goddard officials.

Maryland is no spring chicken when it comes to dinosaur fossils; in fact, the corridor between Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, Md., is known as "Dinosaur Alley," because so many of the beasts' fossils were discovered during iron mining in the 18th and 19th centuries, according to Weishampel. "Today, Maryland remains the only source of Early Cretaceous dinosaur fossils on the East Coast," he wrote in a 1996 article for?Johns Hopkins University magazine.

Tax plan from England Golf and UKGCOA - News - GOLFmagic

England Golf and the UK Golf Course Owners Association (UKGCOA) have announced their aim of achieving a fairer tax system for golf clubs.

Set up to consider and discuss the options to obtain an equitable taxation system for golf facilities irrespective of their ownership status, the group is to be chaired by David Croxton, an England Golf board director and the owner of Cold Ashby Golf Club.

?Current EU directives lead to VAT being applied differently to proprietary clubs and private member clubs,? he says.

?As a result these directives are being challenged by various parties in the industry. In order to reach the best outcome and establish a constructive dialogue with Government decision makers we believe that all sectors of golf club ownership should be represented on the working group.?

The group has been set up at a time when a series of taxation cases affecting golf are being addressed by tribunals and tax in sport is being closely addressed.?

The working group includes proprietary club owners and managers together with representatives of England Golf including the chief executive, John Petrie.?It will be an inclusive group and involve others able to contribute expertise to taxation challenges facing golf.

Jerry Kilby, executive director of UKGCOA adds: ?We are delighted to support this initiative. We believe it is important the golf industry present a united front when addressing critical issues, particularly those that have legal and financial implications.

?A collaborative approach is more likely to realise the outcome best for our game.?

England Golf has provided significant funds in bringing the Chipping Sodbury GC vs HMRC case to tribunal and is committed to ensuring legal issues highlighted are properly aired.?

In addition, both parties have also taken part in constructive discussions with the Sports and Recreation Alliance.

Says Petrie: ?England Golf is best placed in the sport to work on tax related issues with other sports, the Sports and Recreation Alliance and relevant government departments.?

?There is a much better chance of achieving a fairer tax status by working with the whole sporting sector than by golf seeking to be considered a special case.

?This is a great example when golf?s governing body and the representative organisation for golf course proprietors can help bring about benefits to the industry as a whole.?

Surprise July borrowing deficit deals new blow to govt

Britain unexpectedly added to its public sector debt pile in July, official data revealed Tuesday, dealing a blow to the government's hopes of reducing the deficit.

Public sector net borrowing stood at ?600 million ($946 million, 763 million euros) in July compared with a net repayment of ?2.8 billion in the same month one year earlier, the Office for National Statistics said in a statement.

Analysts had forecast a July net repayment of ?2.5 billion, according to a poll by Dow Jones Newswires. July tends to be a surplus month as it sees the Treasury receive a large slice of owed tax receipts.

Explaining the surprise data, a Treasury spokesman said: "Tax receipts are coming in below forecast but this is mostly explained by the weakness in corporation tax, especially from North Sea oil production."

He added: "The government remains committed to the credible plan we have set out to deal with Britain's debts."

The official data excludes the temporary effects of financial interventions such as bank bailouts.

The Ongoing Gene Patenting Debate (And Why You Are Probably ...

An ongoing legal battle regarding gene patents began in 2009 when the ACLU representing numerous clients sued Myriad Genetics and the USPTO. The dispute is over patents on two genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2, discovered in the 1990s which have a correlation to increased rates of breast and ovarian cancer.

The case subsequently went to the Federal Appeals Court that handles biotechnology patents, the Supreme Court, and was earlier this year remanded back to the Federal Appeals Court. On August 16, 2012 the Federal Appeals Court reaffirmed that gene patents are legal. So, why did the activists lose the legal battle?

Whether you are conservative, liberal, or libertarian, or an expert or amateur patent attorney or molecular biologist; the odds are that you have objections to gene patents and made up your mind based on uniformed opinions. The Federal Appeals Court decided that these arguments are misconceptions and consequently were not very convincing. If you are an activist, do you know what a gene patent actually means? Do you know what actually receives patent protection?

In the law suit, the plaintiffs argued that gene patents violate the First Amendment and are therefore invalid and unconstitutional, because genes are products of nature. The court wisely determined everything is a product of nature, but is not always natural. Man derives baseball bats from the wood of ash trees, then carves them in to a desired shape and receives patent protection.

Similarly, isolated BRCA genes are chemically distinct from natural DNA. In nature, BRCA genes are covalently bonded and from a chemist?s perspective they are different molecules than the isolated version. Although the information in both versions of the genes is identical, the patents are on a physical entity. That entity is a molecule, similar to the naturally occurring molecules insulin, EPO, and penicillin produced by man which have also received patent protection.??

Activists routinely refer to ownership of genes which they perceive as immoral. In patent law, however, gene patents do not convey ownership of a gene, rather are a property right guaranteed by the Constitution which temporarily excludes others from receiving financial rewards from a patent holder?s work. Furthermore, the Thirteenth Amendment which abolished slavery prohibits owning genes.

The plaintiffs also argued that the gene patents restrict scientific research. However, the evidence does not support this claim. A National Academy of Sciences study(2003) conducted by Walsh, Arora, and Cohen found:

"Changes in technology and policy over the last several decades have led to concerns that the patent system may be creating difficulties for those trying to perform research in biomedical fields. However, we find that drug discovery has not been substantially impeded by these changes. We also find little evidence that university research has been impeded by concerns about patents on research tools. Rather researchers managed to adopt solutions or work around the problems through licensing, going offshore, using public data, legal action, and infringement."

Furthermore, according to statistics compiled by Bloomberg News more than 18,000 scientists have researched the BRCA genes publishing more than 9,000 research papers.?

The second major dispute of the lawsuit alleges that Myriad?s $3000 screening test for mutations on the BRCA genes is too expensive and restricts access to medical care although it is covered by health insurance. However, a study conducted by Duke University researchers found that contrary to expectations, the BRCA screening test is not particularly costly relative to other tests.

The Duke study found that systemic transaction costs that exist within the medical industry are responsible for high medical costs in general.
