Republican Hagel faces GOP critics at hearing

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republican Chuck Hagel, President Barack Obama's nominee for defense secretary, is facing GOP critics who have challenged his past comments on Israel, Iran and nuclear weapons.

The former two-term senator from Nebraska is the lone witness at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing Thursday that could be crucial in determining whether he will win Senate confirmation to succeed Defense Secretary Leon Panetta in Obama's second-term national security team. Two former committee chairmen ? Democrat Sam Nunn and Republican John Warner ? will introduce the nominee.

If confirmed, Hagel, a decorated Vietnam combat veteran, would be the first enlisted man and first Vietnam veteran to serve as defense secretary.

Hagel has the announced backing of about a dozen Democrats and the tacit support of dozens more who are unlikely to embarrass the president by defeating his Cabinet pick. One Republican ? Sen. Thad Cochran of Mississippi ? has said he will vote for his former colleague.

Six Republicans, including four members of the Armed Services panel, have said they will oppose Hagel's nomination. Sen. Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma, the top GOP lawmaker on the committee, has said he and Hagel are "too philosophically opposed" on issues such as defense spending, nuclear weapons and the Middle East.

Crucial for Hagel will be the questioning by Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. Hagel and McCain are fellow Vietnam veterans who once had a close relationship during their years in the Senate, but politics and Hagel's opposition to increased troop numbers in Iraq divided the two men.

McCain has praised Hagel's military service but said he had serious concerns about positions the nominee has taken on various issues. He said he is reserving judgment until after the hearing. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., earlier this month described Obama's selection as an "in-your-face" pick but was a bit less critical this week.

"Who are we getting ? the guy today or the guy who said things before?" Graham said Tuesday after a 20-minute meeting with Hagel. Graham said he doesn't doubt Hagel's "personal integrity, but I do have real concerns about his policy positions."

The hearing will be the first time Hagel publicly addresses the barrage of criticism that he is not sufficiently pro-Israel or tough enough on Iran. In the past, Hagel has questioned the efficacy of unilateral sanctions on Iran, arguing that penalties in conjunction with international partners made more sense. He has also been criticized for his comments about the influence of a "Jewish lobby" and his view of gay rights.

He addressed several of the issues in a 112-page questionnaire to the committee in which he said his wartime experience would shape his decisions about using military force.

"I understand what it is like to be a soldier in war," wrote Hagel. "I also understand what happens when there is poor morale and discipline among the troops and a lack of clear objectives, intelligence and command and control from Washington. I believe that experience will help me as secretary of defense to ensure we maintain the best fighting force in the world, protect our men and women in uniform and ensure that we are cautious and certain when contemplating the use of force."

In his responses, Hagel adopted a hard line on Iran and its possible pursuit of a nuclear weapon. He echoed Obama's view that all options are feasible to stop Tehran, praised the rounds of penalties and warned of "severe and growing consequences" if Iran balks at international demands.

Questioned about all options, Hagel said, "If confirmed, I will focus intently on ensuring that the U.S. military is in fact prepared for any contingency."

He said that he would continue to put in place the "smart, unprecedented and effective sanctions against the Iranian regime" that Congress and the Obama administration have adopted in recent years.

The criticism of Hagel has surprised some of Hagel's strongest backers.

"This idea that's being propagated that he might be soft on adversaries. Chuck Hagel's not soft on anybody, particularly himself," said Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., a member of the Armed Services Committee, in a conference call with Hagel allies. "He drives hard. He's someone who searches for the right approach and the right policy."

Beer's bitter compounds could help brew new medicines

Jan. 29, 2013 ? Researchers employing a century-old observational technique have determined the precise configuration of humulones, substances derived from hops that give beer its distinctive flavor.

That might not sound like a big deal to the average brewmaster, but the findings overturn results reported in scientific literature in the last 40 years and could lead to new pharmaceuticals to treat diabetes, some types of cancer and other maladies.

"Now that we have the right results, what happens to the bitter hops in the beer-brewing process makes a lot more sense," said Werner Kaminsky, a University of Washington research associate professor of chemistry.

Kaminsky is the lead author of a paper describing the findings, published this month in the journal Angewandte Chemie International Edition.

There is documentation that beer and its bittering acids, in moderation, have beneficial effects on diabetes, some forms of cancer, inflammation and perhaps even weight loss.

Kaminsky used a process called X-ray crystallography to figure out the exact structure of those acids, humulone molecules and some of their derivatives, produced from hops in the brewing process. That structure is important to researchers looking for ways to incorporate those substances, and their health effects, into new pharmaceuticals.

Humulone molecules are rearranged during the brewing process to contain a ring with five carbon atoms instead of six. At the end of the process two side groups are formed that can be configured in four different ways -- both groups can be above the ring or below, or they can be on opposite sides.

Which of the forms the molecule takes determines its "handedness," Kaminsky said, and that is important for understanding how a particular humulone will react with another substance. If they are paired correctly, they will fit together like a nut and bolt.

If paired incorrectly, they might not fit together at all or it could be like placing a right hand into a left-handed glove. That could produce disastrous results in pharmaceuticals.

Kaminsky cited thalidomide, which has a number of safe uses but was famously used to treat morning sickness in pregnant women in the late 1950s and early 1960s before it was discovered to cause birth defects. Molecule "handedness" in one form of the drug was responsible for the birth defects, while the orientation of molecules in another form did not appear to have the negative effects.

To determine the configuration of humulones formed in the brewing process, coauthors Jan Urban, Clinton Dahlberg and Brian Carroll of KinDex Therapeutics, a Seattle pharmaceutical firm that funded the research, recovered acids from the brewing process and purified them.

They converted the humulones to salt crystals and sent them to Kaminsky, who used X-ray crystallography -- a technique developed in the early 20th century -- to determine the exact configuration of the molecules.

"Now that we know which hand belongs to which molecule, we can determine which molecule goes to which bitterness taste in beer," Kaminsky said.

The authors point out that while "excessive beer consumption cannot be recommended to propagate good health, isolated humulones and their derivatives can be prescribed with documented health benefits."

Some of the compounds have been shown to affect specific illnesses, Kaminsky said, while some with a slight difference in the arrangement of carbon atoms have been ineffective.

The new research sets the stage for finding which of those humulones might be useful in new compounds to be used as medical treatments.

Why Houses Need Plumbing Vents (forget the soda bottle analogy)

When it comes to first time home buyers, one of the least understood components of a home seems to be plumbing vents. ?You know, those pipes sticking up out of the roof that run through the attic and through the rest of the house. ?All plumbing fixtures, with the possible exception of floor drains, require a plumbing vent. ?Vents are frequently connected together inside the attic, which allows for less penetrations in the roof.

Plumbing vent

Plumbing vents prevent traps from being siphoned.

Let me repeat that - plumbing vents prevent traps from being siphoned. ?They also prevent back-pressure on traps, but today the focus is on siphoning. You may have heard that plumbing fixtures will drain faster when they're vented properly, and I know I've said this myself, but that's not the purpose of vents. ?The common, improper analogy is to talk about dumping a soda bottle upside down. ?You watch the water glug out while air replaces it, and this makes it drain super slow. ?Once you put a hole in the other side, the water drains out very quickly. ?

This analogy doesn't hold water because?the top side of every plumbing fixture is wide open. ?The top of a toilet is open. ?The top of a sink is open. ?The top of a bath tub is open. ?If you wanted to re-create the soda bottle analogy, you would need to block off the top of the plumbing fixture and then try to drain the water out. ?I can't think of any instance where this could possibly happen.

Every plumbing fixture has a?trap, which prevents sewer gas from coming in to the home. ?When a lot of water drains through a plumbing fixture, it can be enough water to create a siphon effect, which has the potential to pull water right out of the plumbing trap. ?In my blog about?S-traps, I included a quick video clip of an unvented drain having water siphoned out of it, leaving the trap with far less water than it should have had. ?Here's that same clip again.

While writing that post about S-traps, I even set up a home experiment where I was able to get almost all of the water in a trap siphoned out. ?This is the same way it works in a house. ?When water is siphoned, it typically makes an annoying 'sucking' sound. ?To demonstrate this, I cut apart the vent on my own kitchen sink and blocked it off, just to show what a difference a vent will make. ?To really appreciate the difference, turn up the volume while watching this.

For the record, the water actually drained out of my sink about 8 seconds?faster?with the vent blocked, because the water was being pulled (or?siphoned) through the drain. ?When water is siphoned through the drain, the water in the trap gets siphoned. ?This can lead to sewer gas coming in to the home.

In short, plumbing vents are there to help prevent sewer gas from coming in to the home.

Tuesday in politics: Obama talks immigration in Vegas, and more

Immigration remains at the top of the Washington agenda Tuesday, as President Obama travels to Las Vegas to rally public support for his proposals for reforming the nation's immigration system.

The president will deliver remarks in a campaign-style event this afternoon at Del Sol High School.

White House officials said Obama would largely endorse an immigration blueprint announced Monday by a bipartisan group of senators, though the president's plan was expected to be more progressive and include a faster pathway to citizenship for millions of people already in the U.S. illegally.

Also Tuesday, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee meets to consider Obama's nomination of John Kerry to be secretary of state. Kerry is expected to win overwhelming approval from the panel, which he currently chairs.

Meanwhile, the outgoing secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, hosts a "Global Townterview," in which she will take questions from young people around the world via satellite, Twitter, Facebook, and Skype. Clinton's last day in office is Friday.

And then there is this: Today is the 170th birthday of William McKinley, the 25th president of the United States. McKinley, who was born in 1843, served from 1897 until his assassination in 1901. It's also the 59th birthday of media mogul/Obama friend Oprah Winfrey.

Apple shares fall on report of parts orders cuts

(AP) ? Apple shares are down 4 percent in morning trading, putting them below the $500 mark for the first time since February.

The drop came after The Wall Street Journal reported that the company has cut its orders for iPhone 5 components due to weaker-than-expected demand.

The newspaper says that two people it did not identify by name told it that Apple's first quarter orders for iPhone 5 screens have dropped to about half of what the company had previously planned to order.

It says one of the people told the newspaper that the Cupertino, Calif., company has also cut orders for components other than screens.

Apple shares dipped as low as $498.51 early in the session before climbing back to $505.14 later in the morning.

(AP) ? Thousands of supporters of a fiery cleric who has been calling for election reforms were descending Monday on the Pakistani capital, where authorities have put up barricades and sent riot police into the streets in preparation.

The entry of Tahir-ul-Qadri, a mysterious cleric who just recently returned from Canada, into the Pakistani political scene has galvanized supporters looking for political reforms but worried detractors who fear he'll derail upcoming elections.

Qadri is leading a march of thousands of supporters to Islamabad to pressure the government to accede to his demands.

About 15,000 of his supporters left the eastern city of Lahore, where the headquarters of Qadri's Minhaj-ul-Quran organization are located. They are expected to arrive in Islamabad later on Monday, as more supporters join the rally along the way.

Thousands of police have been deployed in the Pakistani capital, and officers in riot gear are manning the city's main roads and streets.

Authorities have used shipping containers to block off the part of the city where most government offices and embassies are located.

Qadri returned to Pakistan in December after living for years in Canada, where he's also a citizen.

His calls for reforms ahead of elections this spring have galvanized many Pakistanis disenchanted after five years of a political system they say is deeply corrupt. The cleric's vaguely-worded demands include vetting of political candidates to make sure they're honest and taking steps to even out the political playing field so more people can participate in the political process.

That type of rhetoric has invigorated many Pakistanis who are angry that the last five years of the current administration have brought little but electricity blackouts, unemployment and terror attacks.

But some of Qadri's comments have worried observers who fear the cleric is a front for the military to derail the democratic process just as it prepares for a historic transfer of power from one civilian government to another.

He's called for a role in the military in picking of the caretaker government. Under Pakistan's constitution, once the current government names an election date, a caretaker government takes over as a way to ensure impartiality in the election process, usually for a period of 60 to 90 days.

Qadri has said he does not want to delay the elections but if the caretaker government needs more than 90 days to ensure reforms, then that's not against the constitution.

Those comments, as well as questions about where his funding is coming from, have sparked fears that Qadri is really trying to derail the upcoming vote for the Pakistani military, which is believed to dislike both the main political parties vying for power. Qadri has denied any such involvement.

'Chainsaw 3-D' carves out No. 1 debut with $23M

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? It took Leatherface and his chainsaw to chase tiny hobbit Bilbo Baggins out of the top spot at the box office.

Lionsgate's horror sequel "Texas Chainsaw 3-D" debuted at No. 1 with $23 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. The movie picks up where 1974's "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" left off, with masked killer Leatherface on the loose again.

Quentin Tarantino's revenge saga "Django Unchained" held on at No. 2 for a second-straight weekend with $20.1 million. The Weinstein Co. release raised its domestic total to $106.4 million.

After three weekends at No. 1, part one of Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit" trilogy slipped to third with $17.5 million. That lifts the domestic haul to $263.8 million for "The Hobbit," the Warner Bros. blockbuster that also has topped $500 million overseas to raise its worldwide total to about $800 million.

Also passing the $100 million mark over the weekend was Universal's musical "Les Miserables," which finished at No. 4 with $16.1 million, pushing its domestic total to $103.6 million.

Like other horror franchises, "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" has had several other remakes or sequels, but the idea always seems ripe for a new wave of fright-flick fans. Nearly two-thirds of the audience was under 25, too young ? or not even born ? when earlier "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" movies came out.

"It's one of those that survives each generation. It's something that continues to come back and entertain its audience," said Richie Fay, head of distribution for Lionsgate.

"Texas Chainsaw" drew a hefty 84 percent of its business from 3-D screenings. Many movies now draw 50 percent or less of their revenue from 3-D screenings, but horror fans tend to prefer paying extra to see blood and guts fly with an added dimension.

In narrower release, Matt Damon's natural-gas fracking drama "Promised Land" had a slow start in its nationwide debut, coming in at No. 10 with $4.3 million after opening in limited release a week earlier.

Released by Focus Features, "Promised Land" stars Damon as a salesman pitching rural residents on fracking technology to drill for natural gas. The film widened to 1,676 theaters, averaging a slim $2,573 a cinema, compared with $8,666 in 2,654 theaters for "Texas Chainsaw."

Hollywood began the year where it left in 2012, when business surged during the holidays to carry the industry to a record $10.8 billion at the domestic box office.

Overall business this weekend came in at $149 million, up 7 percent from the same period last year, when "The Devil Inside" led with $33.7 million, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com. But with strong business on New Year's Day last week, Hollywood already has raked in $254.2 million, 33 percent ahead of last year.

Box-office results ebb and flow quickly, so that lead could vanish almost overnight. But with a steady lineup of potential hits right through December, studios have a chance at another revenue record this year.

"The month that we had at the end of last year that led us to a record year continued right through New Year's and on now to the first official weekend of 2013," said Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian. "We're looking for an even stronger year this year. That's in the realm of possibility. But we have 51 weekends to go."

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

    1. "Texas Chainsaw 3-D," $23 million.

    2. "Django Unchained," $20.1 million.

    3. "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," $17.5 million.

    4. "Les Miserables," $16.1 million ($14.5 million international).

    5. "Parental Guidance," $10.1 million.

    6. "Jack Reacher," $9.3 million ($22.3 million international).

    7. "This Is 40," $8.6 million.

    8. "Lincoln," $5.3 million.

    9. "The Guilt Trip," $4.5 million.

    10. "Promised Land," $4.3 million.

Structural studies of a toxin from Bacillus cereus that causes diarrhea

Jan. 4, 2013 ? Food poisoning caused by Bacillus cereus can lead to diarrhea which is probably caused by a 3-component toxin which is produced by this bacteria strain and which perforates and kills cells. New doctoral research has revealed one of the protein structures of this toxin and has led to a better understanding of the mechanisms behind multi-component, pore-forming toxins. These findings can enhance food safety.

Bacteria produce toxins in order to defend themselves and to gain nourishment. Pore-forming toxins make up about a third of all bacterial toxins. These toxins kill cells by making holes in the cell walls, so causing leakages and swelling which in turn leads to the disintegration of the cells. The most common pore-forming toxins consist of one protein and in some special cases, of two proteins.

Toxins which consist of three proteins (3-component) are extremely rare. The bacterium Bacillus cereus produces two such 3-component toxins. One of them is non-hemolytic enterotoxin, also known as Nhe. It is believed that this toxin is the major food poisoning toxin produced by B. cereus. It is found in all B. cereus strains that cause food poisoning and in nearly all other B. cereus strains. The three proteins in the Nhe toxin are called NheA, NheB and NheC.

In the course of her doctoral research, Danh Phung discovered the crystalline structure of one of the proteins in the Nhe toxin: NheA. This protein is the least studied of this toxin complex, but its presence is essential in order to achieve full cellular toxicity and pore formation. Phung's study is also the first to show that the Nhe proteins form structures resembling pores.

The way the Nhe toxin works is not fully understood. Phung showed that NheB, which is believed to be the most important protein in this toxin complex, forms pore-like structures of itself and produces large amounts of molecules by means of an artificial cell membrane, for example a lipid. These findings indicate that the NheB protein undergoes structural changes before the pore-forming process, which involves the other Nhe-proteins, begins.

Danh Phung carried out her doctoral research at the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science in collaboration with the Sir Hans Krebs Institute at the University of Sheffield in the UK.

M.Sc. Danh Phung defended her doctoral research on 18th December 2012 at the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science (NVH) with a thesis entitled "Structure and mode of action on the Nhe enterotoxin from Bacillus cereus."

Death gets joyous sendoff on 'Best Funeral Ever'

    By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

For many, a funeral is a sad and solemn occasion. For others, while it's still sad, it's also a chance to throw a big party. And a new TLC series is spotlighting some of these extravagant, exuberant spectacles in a new series, "Best Funeral Ever."

Kerry Sanders reported on the phenomenon as spotlighted in the show on TODAY Friday, noting that these kind of bashes aren't called funerals, but "homegoings," and showed scenes from one particular celebration where mourners danced, ate ribs and wrangled pigs as a fountain flowed with barbecue sauce. (The decedent for that funeral, Willie "Wolf" McCoy, had been a singer on the famous Chili's jingle about baby back ribs.)

That's the point of the funerals, which are based on a person's life -- a football fan might have items and activities related to the sport, a person who loved Christmas may have actual reindeer to show up at the party. Sanders noted the funerals can cost as upwards of $40,000, and in theory, the sky is the limit.

"These are families who have lost loved ones. So there is never any disrespect with these type of homegoing celebrations," said John Beckwith Jr., CEO of the Golden Gate Funeral Home.?

"Best Funeral Ever" airs Sunday, Jan. 6 at 10 p.m. on TLC.

Check out the sneak peek clip from the show below!

White House urged to build Starship Enterprise

An engineer is petitioning the White House to study the possibility of building a real-life starship Enterprise like the fictional vessel in television's "Star Trek."

The proposal was submitted through the White House's official "We the People" channel, which promises an administration response to any petition that gathers at least 25,000 signatures. Just last month, a petition to build a Death Star like the spherical spaceship in the movie "Star Wars" garnered that critical mass, and is currently awaiting its official response.

The Enterprise proposal comes from an engineer who goes by the name BTE Dan, who detailed plans for constructing a life-size, flyable starship Enterprise on his website last year.

"We have within our technological reach the ability to build the 1st generation of the USS Enterprise," BTE Dan wrote in the petition, viewable here.

As of this writing, the petition had 3,335 signatures, with more than 21,000 to go.

The project, BTE Dan maintains, wouldn't be a vanity exercise, but rather a practical step forward for space exploration. [The Top 10 Star Trek Technologies]

"It ends up that this ship's inspiring form is quite functional," he wrote. "This will be Earth's first gigawatt-class interplanetary spaceship with artificial gravity. The ship can serve as a spaceship, space station, and space port all in one. In total, one thousand crew members & visitors can be on board at once."

Some experts have questioned the feasibility of certain aspects of BTE Dan's plan ? for example, no technology for artificial gravity currently exists, and the largest number of people ever accommodated on any space vehicle until now has been 13 (when the shuttle Discovery docked to the International Space Station in April 2010).

However, scientists are pursuing the dream of interstellar spaceflight ? travel to other stars ? which would require a significant technological leap from current spacecraft, none of which have yet left the solar system. An organization called 100 Year Starship, initially kicked off with seed money from NASA and the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), aims to establish the technologies needed for interstellar flight within 100 years.

Plus, if the Enterprise could be built, BTE Dan argues that its motivational benefits would match its scientific paybacks.

"Few things could collectively inspire people on Earth more than seeing the Enterprise being built in space," he wrote.

Deep emotions run beneath Russia's adoption ban

The Duma's bill to ban US adoptions of Russian children, which passed another legislative hurdle today, appeals to Russian pride and concerns about the US.

    By Mike Eckel,?Correspondent / December 22, 2012

Russian President Vladimir Putin speaks during a news conference in Moscow, Russia, Thursday. Putin says a draft bill banning US adoptions of Russian children is a legitimate response to a new US law that calls for sanctions on Russians deemed to be human rights violators.

You usually can judge Vladimir Putin?s dislike of a reporter's question by the intensity of his expression. Such was the case this week at his annual news conference, when he greeted with a hard scowl the subject of pending Russian legislation that would ban Americans from adopting orphaned children. Mr. Putin unleashed invective on the fact that consular representatives aren?t allowed to visit adopted Russian children in the United States.

?I believe that is unacceptable. Do you think this is normal? How can it be normal when you are humiliated? Do you like it? Are you a sadomasochist or something? They shouldn?t humiliate our country,? he told reporters in Moscow.

As is often the case in Russia, there is the issue of what is going on versus what is really going on. And as is often the case in Russia, it?s complicated.

There is very little doubt as to the goal of the legislation, which passed its third and final reading in the lower house of parliament Friday and must still be signed by Putin. The bill is named after Dima Yakovlev, the toddler who died of heat stroke in 2007 after his adopted father forgot him in a locked car in Virginia for nine hours. The father, Miles Harrison, was acquitted of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Dima, whose adopted name was Chase. His acquittal in 2008 sparked banner newspaper headlines, incendiary TV news reports, and howls of outrage in Russia.

Lawmakers in the State Duma made it clear that today's legislation is a direct response to the US ?Magnitsky Act,? a law designed to sanction a particular group of Russian officials connected to the death of a whistle-blowing lawyer in a Moscow prison.

In other words, a law designed to punish people tied to a lawyer?s prison death has been answered with a law to prevent people from adopting orphaned children, many of whom have have developmental or other disabilities and will otherwise end up living much of their lives in orphanages that often resemble state mental hospitals of a bygone era.

Adoption is a searingly emotional issue for Russians, and one easily manipulated by the Kremlin. The institution of adoption is relatively uncommon in Russia, for cultural and other reasons. And judging by headlines in the Moscow tabloids, and the rhetoric of some state lawmakers, you?d think that Americans adopt Russian children to eat them.
