Is Your Online Reputation Getting Out Of Hand? | PC-OS.org

, Lewishooker, Leave a comment

The permanence and speed of the internet is both daunting and convenient. ?Because content your share on the internet is lasting and pervasive, it can be difficult to predict how the information you share today can affect you in the years to come. ?This applies to your business as well. Taking due care to diligently monitor your reputation and protect your business is not a luxury; it is a necessity. ?Anybody who plans to nurture a business into a successful enterprise needs a plan for monitoring their business? online reputation. ?

Components of Managing Your Business? Online Reputation

  • Tracking mentions of your business
  • Protecting your private information
  • Handling negative publicity
  • Dealing with user generated content and feedback

Business reputation management strategies should be a consideration for anyone in business that needs assistance in managing a brand, or could use a bit of help cleaning up an existing internet reputation that may have a few blemishes. ?Protecting the brand that you have spent so much time building is important. ?If you have spent time building your website, blogging, engaging in social media or generating any other creative content at all you need to protect it. Content and postings such as video, press releases and podcasts means you are already participating in managing your online reputation. ?So take the next steps in order to be proactive in protecting your business.

Have a Plan for Managing Your Reputation

All of this may seem complicated, and that is because it can be if you do not stay on top of it. ?Managing the online reputation of one individual can be difficult, depending on internet activity level. Managing the online reputation of a business is definitely a full time job. ?As your business grows and you develop your brand, there are more and more aspects of your online reputation that you must monitor and attend to.

Inaccurate or negative content is something that every business will have to contend with from time to time. Have a plan in place regarding business reputation management help. ?If you have the proper support, dealing with these common problems does not have to throw you off course. Companies like Reputation.com offer help in developing internet reputation management plans that will fit your business.

Pay Attention to Internet Buzz about Your Business

People talking about you and reacting to your business can be great publicity and it can be free marketing; these things are great. ?On the other hand, if you accrue bad reviews, disgruntled former employee comments and competitor content you may have a problem. All these items can negatively impact your business if you do not have a plan to deal with it.

Social media can allow you to reach a larger audience and build relationships that may not have otherwise been possible. ?But the internet has a life of its own. ?The best you can do is to have a plan of your own and stay on top of managing your business reputation.

SKorea's government says Samsung chip plant caused worker's breast cancer

SEOUL, South Korea - A South Korean government agency says working at a Samsung Electronics factory caused the breast cancer of a worker who died earlier this year.

Korea Workers' Compensation and Welfare Service said Friday there was a considerable causal relationship between the woman's cancer and her five years of work at a Samsung semiconductor plant in South Korea.

The agency under the labour ministry said she was exposed to organic solvents and radiation at Samsung. It reviewed records from other countries that showed night shifts are related to a higher chance of breast cancer and that exposure to hazards at a young age is more likely to cause cancer.

The woman worked for Samsung from 1995 to 2000. She died in March, aged 36, three years after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

Will We Have Economic Recovery in 2013 - Reason

Recovery Trouble 2013Where is the economy heading in 2013? This question was a much discussed topic during the presidential race, but it was always framed in electoral politics. Now that we finally have the election behind us we can consider the question on its own terms. There are long-term challenges for the economy, but of more pertinent concern is what does the coming year have in store. Here are the problems that I see going into 2013 in no particular order:

(1) Housing is Not in Recovery ? Foreclosures, short-sales, and unemployment problems look to continue limiting the number of homebuyers and housing will continue to struggle (though some local levels will see recovery, nationally this remains a problem).

(2) Unemployment Still Will be High ? Millions of workers remain unemployed for more than 6+ months and will not re-enter the labor force easily or quickly, labor force participation won?t increase overnight, productivity has increased since the recession even though total employment has fallen, and structural changes such as shifts in the sectors of large scale employment will be a problem for a while.

(3) Regulatory and Tax Uncertainty for Business Investment ?There are a host of Dodd-Frank regulations waiting to be implemented, and another four years of Obama means increased environment and labor regulations slowing down business.

(4) Private Debt Deleveraging ? Probably the biggest challenge is that mortgage debt has only slowly declined relative to housing prices, and while housing prices are at 2003 levels, mortgage debt is 67 percent higher today than in 2003. This means there is a lot more deleveraging to go through. As I wrote for RealClearMarkets this morning:

If you are a Keynesian, then consumers shedding their existing debt means a?reduction in aggregate spending, stalling the key engine of growth?. The story isn't much better if you prefer a more supply-side economic approach to jumpstarting growth, and want to reduce taxes and regulations on businesses so they can thrive. If businesses, particularly small businesses whose expenses are part of their household budgets, are more interested in deleveraging than expanding, then tax cuts and regulatory burdens will have only a small effect on economic growth in the short run. This does not mean these policies should be ignored, but rather that their true value will be to set the stage for a stronger long-term recovery as lower taxes and regulatory costs will allow these businesses to clear their balance sheets faster. The deleveraging cycle still needs to process.

(5) Fiscal Cliff? ? It is not clear yet how Congress will address the fiscal cliff, but if we go over entirely it will have a negative impact on the economy. Whether that is a problem depends on how bad the above four problems make the economy anyway and whether you believe short-term pain from reduced government spending is worth the long-term need to cut the deficit and national debt.

And none of this gets into the long-term challenges for the economy like the national debt, out of control entitlement spending, QEnfinity as monetary policy, declining education outcomes, and rising health care costs.

Still despite all of this, I?m a cautionary optimist because we are in a better place than 2008, and most of this is more likely to mean a stagnating economy (growing around or under 2 percent) rather than another recession. But you do the math and decide whether this is what recovery looks like or not.

Sony has released a new trailer for the upcoming hack and slash prequel God of War: Ascension. It stars the first game?s antagonist and son of Zeus himself, Ares. Ares was the original ?god of war?, before Kratos appeared and brutally murdered him and inevitably took his throne.

The trailer also shows off some of the combat in the game?s multiplayer mode, presenting Ares? minions. Each have a unique ability bestowed upon them by Ares. You may not be surprised to see some violence unfold, blood splatter and some things burning.

Here?s the link to the exclusive trailer on GameTrailers.

God of War: Ascension will be smashing its way exclusively onto PS3 on the following dates:

  • NA: March 12, 2013
  • EU: March 13, 2013
  • AU: March 14, 2013
  • UK: March 15, 2013

Will you be buying Sony?s latest effort and delving into Kratos? origins?

Puerto Rico vote endorses statehood with asterisk

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) ? Puerto Ricans have supported U.S. statehood in a vote that jubilant members of the pro-statehood party say is the strongest sign yet that the Caribbean island territory is on the road to losing its second-class status.

But Tuesday's vote comes with an asterisk and an imposing political reality: The island remains bitterly divided over its relationship to the United States and many question the validity of this week's referendum.

Nearly a half million voters chose to leave a portion of the ballot blank. And voters also ousted the pro-statehood governor, eliminating one of the main advocates for a cause that would need the approval of the U.S. Congress.

"Statehood won a victory without precedent but it's an artificial victory," said Angel Israel Rivera Ortiz, a political science professor at the University of Puerto Rico. "It reflects a divided and confused electorate that is not clear on where it's going."

President Barack Obama had said he would support the will of the Puerto Rican people on the question of the island's relationship to the U.S., referred to simply on the island as its "status," and this week's referendum was intended to be the barometer.

But the results aren't so clear cut. It was a two-part ballot that first asked all voters if they favor the current status as a U.S. territory. Regardless of the answer, all voters then had the opportunity to choose in the second question from three options: statehood, independence or "sovereign free association," which would grant more autonomy to the island of nearly 4 million people.

More than 900,000 voters, or 54 percent, responded "no" to the first question, saying they were not content with the current status.

On the second question, only about 1.3 million voters made a choice. Of those, nearly 800,000, or 61 percent of those expressing an opinion, chose statehood ? the first majority after three previous referendums on the issue over the past 45 years. Some 437,000 backed sovereign free association and 72,560 chose independence. Nearly 500,000, however, left that question blank.

"We made history with this plebiscite," said Resident Commissioner Pedro Pierluisi, the island's representative in Congress and a member of both the pro-statehood New Progressive Party and the Democratic Party.

The certified results will be sent to the White House and the congressional leadership, and it would be up to them to begin the process of possibly admitting Puerto Rico into the union.

"The ball is now in Congress' court and Congress will have to react to this result," Pierluisi said. "This is a clear result that says 'no' to the current status."

Gov. Luis Fortuno, a member of the pro-statehood party who is also a Republican, welcomed the results and said he was hopeful that Congress would take up the cause.

But Fortuno won't be around to lead the fight: Voters turned him out of office after one term, and gave the governship to Alejandro Garcia Padilla of the Popular Democratic Party, which wants Puerto Rico to remain a semi-autonomous U.S. commonwealth.

Garcia has pledged to hold a constitutional assembly in 2014 to address the island's status, followed by another referendum with support from Congress.

Margarita Nolasco, the vice president of the Puerto Rican Senate from the pro-statehood party, said she feared the commonwealth forces would seek to undermine the plebiscite.

"At the beginning of the last century, statehood appeared to be an impossible dream," Nolasco said. "After a century of battles and electoral defeats, statehood just became the political force of majority that Puerto Ricans prefer."

Besides pointing to the defeat of the governor, albeit by a margin of less than 1 percent, skeptics point to other signs that statehood is not ascendant in Puerto Rico.

Luis Delgado Rodriguez, who leads a group that supports sovereign free association, noted all the voters who left the second question blank, raising questions about their preference. He said those voters, coupled with those who support independence and sovereign free association, add up to more than those who favored statehood.

"This represents an overwhelming majority against statehood," he said.

The results are also murky because everyone could vote in the second round no matter how they marked the first question ? and the choice of "sovereign free association" is not the same as the current status. So people could have voted for both no change in the first round and any of the choices in the second. Nearly 65,000 left the first question blank.

"With that kind of message, Congress is not going to do anything, and neither is President Obama," Rivera said.

Puerto Rico has been a territory for 114 years and its people have been U.S. citizens since 1917. Residents of the island cannot vote in the U.S. presidential election, have no representation in the Senate and only limited representation in the House of Representatives.

It's a situation that frustrates many, as does the long-simmering political uncertainty. Independence was once the dominant political movement on the island but no longer: Only 6 percent of voters opted to sever ties from the U.S., a prospect that scared voters like 31-year-old Jose Ramos.

"I prefer that the United States helps us, because to stand on our own two feet, no," said the father of three. "I don't want this to become a republic. That scares me."

NaNoWriMo: The Cure for Slacking on Content Development ...

Depending on who you?re friending and following in the social sphere, you may or may not be aware that November is National Novel Writing Month. NaNoWriMo, as it?s known, is an annual drive to get people writing and thinking creatively as they work to write novels. In order to be a winner, you must have at least 50,000 words complete and submitted to the official NaNoWriMo site word-counter by 11:59 pm on November 30th.

While it takes way more than 50,000 words to actually finish a novel (in many cases, at least twice that), the challenge affords writers with the opportunity to experiment with different techniques and styles, as well as to explore their creativity. The competitive spirit drives people (and the fact that they can compare daily word counts with their friends and ?writing buddies? doesn?t hurt) to shoot for 1,667 words every day for the entire month.

That seems like a lot, and it is, but that?s the pace you have to keep if you want to hit that 50k mark in 30 days.

Cool story. What?s it got to do with content development and my business?

We?re all looking for ways to improve our content development. We want to have blogs and other resources that bring in traffic, educate our customers and prospects, and keep people coming back for more. As more businesses allocate larger percentages of their budgets for content marketing, it becomes even more important that we?re successful in those endeavors. Success means conversions.

But we all ho-hum over our blogs, start with good intentions and then let them fall apart. What we need is to be seriously motivated.

And that?s where NaNoWriMo comes in.

No, you can?t count blog posts and white papers toward your 50,000 words. And yes, it will take a lot of your time. Especially at first. If you want Thanksgiving off, for example, so that you can blissfully fall into a deep, tryptophan-induced sleep while watching football, you?ve got to work extra hard earlier in the month to make up those words. Likewise if you want Black Friday off to spend all day shopping.

So it takes some planning.

You can take a day off if you really want to or need to, but then you?re just going to have to work twice as hard later. You might think that you have nothing to say, only to realize when you get started that the ideas start flowing as you go.

So it takes some persistence and perseverance.

But here?s the thing about using NaNoWriMo as a means to help you improve your content development and overall content strategy: As a creative individual (and a writer especially), it changes you.

You think that you can?t possibly write 1,667 words in one day, let alone 50,000 words in a month. But then you get started, and you keep writing even when you don?t necessarily feel like it or have any ?good? ideas. You see where the story takes you. You let yourself be as creative as you want to be and you take chances because what have you really got to lose?

As you do that, you begin to build momentum. After the second week, you know that you?re in it to win it, and you find that you want to keep that momentum going. At the beginning, you maybe struggled to write a few hundred words a day, but as time goes on, you?re not only meeting your daily 1,667, but you?re exceeding it.

What you thought you knew about yourself as a writer changes.

You may think that creative writing has nothing to do with your business, but then you realize that it actually helps quite a bit with content development and generating fresh ideas. In fact, many businesses are beginning to seek out creative writers to help with such efforts.

You may think that writing 1,667 words a day has nothing to do with your business, but then, when you sit down to write that 500 word blog post, it suddenly doesn?t seem so daunting anymore. You?ve written far more than that before ? and on a daily basis!

And speaking of a daily basis: NaNoWriMo helps you get into the habit of becoming a daily writer. If your business blog was only updated sporadically before, this is a great way to train yourself to write more frequently. We?re all aware by now that search engines value fresh, original content. The more often you?re producing it, the better your traffic will be. With traffic comes, we hope, leads and conversions.

NaNoWriMo will motivate you as a writer. It may even make you remember why you loved writing to begin with. After fulfilling the requirements for my creative writing minor in college, I went for a few years without writing much of anything besides lesson plans. In 2009, a friend convinced me to participate in NaNoWriMo. It was definitely a struggle at first, but I stuck with it. It gave me a routine and goals, and I could tell I was improving every day. By Thanksgiving, I had my 50,000 words finished. By the beginning of July I?d written a complete novel and was blogging all the time because I had so many ideas for that outlet now, as well. I hit my 50k on a second novel in 2010 before I realized what I could be doing with all the lessons I?d learned and skills I?d gained from NaNoWriMo.

Now I?m writing professionally and it?s great. Definitely one of the best decisions I?ve made.

The point here is that, sometimes, in order to improve, you have to think outside the box. Writing a novel might not seem to make much sense for your business at first (unless you?re going to write a business book, of course ? eBooks are still part of content development!), but it helps you to expand your creative horizons and grow as a content creator.

You?re down about six days now, but people have come back from bigger deficits. How about giving it a try? Even if you don?t reach 50k, you?re bound to take away some valuable content development lessons.

Have you ever participated in NaNoWriMo? How has it helped you as a writer, both personally and professionally? Did you see a change in your content development? If you haven?t participated, what?s holding you back? We?d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

Determine Whether or Not You Need a Hearing Aid

Almost everyone will have some type of deafness, whether it is permanent or temporary, at some point in his or her life. If you are now experiencing it, visit your local audiologist so that you can have it checked. Your problem may be something simple, or it can be more complex, requiring you to be fitted for a hearing aid. These problems can range anywhere from the natural aging process or some type of blockage of part of the ear canal.

Fixing the problem can be fairly simple. If it is a blockage, it can be easily cleaned out at your doctor?s office through the use of instruments or flushing, or it can be done at home through home remedies that your doctor can recommend. Using objects, such as cotton swabs, is never a good way to clean them out. Other things that can cause you to suffer from deafness are infection, injuries, birth defects, or another type of issue that can be found in the canal itself.

The outer ear is not the only problem when it comes to not being able to hear. Deafness can also be the result of a problem in the middle ear. One of these can be an infection, which is a result of fluid build up or swelling inside resulting in the temporary inability to hear. Usually your physician will prescribe some medications to heal. If you have infections often, he may suggest that you get tubes put in so that can you can experience some relief from pressure.

Not only is deafness caused by problems in the outer and middle ear, but also in the inner ear. Some things that damage the inner ear are otosclerosis, which is an extra bone in the ear, tumors, and birth defects. All these things can be corrected through surgery and a hearing aid should not be necessary.

Other things that can cause the loss but don?t result in the need for a hearing aid are fistula, which occurs when some type of trauma to the head has occurred, resulting in the leaking of fluid, due to a fall, as well as exposure to loud noises. This is usually caused by noisy things around you, such as a factory job, constant use of power tools, gunfire without the proper ear protection, and frequent use of earphones. Surgery can also help correct these problems as well.

If you are having trouble with your ears and you want to find what caused it, make an appointment with your audiologist. He can examine you, test your ears, prescribe medications to help you fight infection, and get you fitted for a hearing aid if you need it. There is no reason to miss out on those sounds of life if you don?t have to.

Come to our clinic to find out if you need a northwest illinois hearing aid. Please visit http://www.miracle-ear-nwillinois.com today to learn more.

City birds adapt to their new predators

Wednesday, November 7, 2012

Faced with the same threat, city and country birds do not react in the same way despite being from the same species. According to a new study, urban birds have changed their anti-predator behaviour in new environments.

When a bird is faced with a predator, its only objective is to escape. However, city birds do not react in the same way as their countryside counterparts, despite being from the same species. Urbanisation plays an influential role in their survival strategies.

To study this phenomenon, Juan Diego Ib??ez-?lamo, researcher at the University of Granada (UGR) and Anders Pape M?ller from Paris-Sud University (France) analysed the escape techniques of 1,132 birds belonging to 15 species in different rural and urban areas.

Published in the Animal Behaviour journal, the results show that city birds have changed their behaviour to adapt to new threats like cats (their main predator in the city) instead of their more traditional enemies in the countryside, such as the sparrow hawk.

"When they are captured, city birds are less aggressive, they produce alarm calls more frequently, they remain more paralysed when attacked by their predator and they loose more feathers than their countryside counterparts," as explained to SINC by Juan Diego Ib??ez-?lamo.

The surprising thing is that urbanisation is directly linked with these differences, which become more acute the earlier the former has taken place. This suggests that escape strategies evolve alongside the expansion of cities; a concept that is on the increase worldwide.

Adapt or die in the territory of man

Like the habitat of many animals and plants, the habitat of birds changes and fragments. Discovering how they adapt to transformations in their habitat is "crucial" for understanding how to lessen their effects. "Predation change caused by city growth is serious," outlines Ib??ez-?lamo.

As the scientist indicates, tactics against their hunters are "crucial" so that birds can adapt to their new environment: "Birds should modify their behaviour to be able to survive in cities because if not, they will become extinct at the mercy of urban growth."

###

M?ller, A. P.; Ib??ez-?lamo, J. D. "Escape behaviour of birds provides evidence of predation being involved in urbanization" Animal Behaviour 84(2): 341-348 DOI: 10.1016/j.anbehav.2012.04.030, 2012.

Patient Access to Their Data | HealthWorks Collective

The Open Notes initiative has created a flurry of interest in the on-line medical community but not even a blip that I can tell in my personal world. Patients appear oblivious. The story was not covered by our local newspaper. No physicians are nervously or otherwise discussing it in our doctor's lounge.

Despite Meaningful Use criteria breathing down our organizations's neck, which includes patient portals with the capability to obtain their records electronically, no one is talking about this important study: three healthcare systems, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Geisinger Health System in ?Pennsylvania, and Harborview Medical Center in Seattle participated. This included 105 doctors and more than 13,000 patients. When the study was finished 99% of patients surveyed wanted continued access to their notes and NO DOCTORS opted out.?

The last phrase is the most important one to me as a physician. In my world doctors are often very nervous at the thought of patients obtaining access to their own records even though?technically the?patient owns the record. Yet the more I see of charting, especially electronic charting, the more important it is that patients have the ability to access and help us improve their records.?

As an example, I recently had a new patient who related being involved in a motor vehicle accident many years ago. He'd had surgery shortly after but he wasn't sure whether or not he'd had his spleen removed, though he knew it had ruptured. This is important because individuals who have no spleen are at increased risk of certain kinds of infections and need routine and regular followup vaccinations to protect them. The first thing I did was access records from an?abdominal?hernia surgery he'd had just a few years ago, to repair a hernia he had as a result of the first surgery. The operating doctor dictated in his note that the patient had had a splenectomy. I wasn't convinced so I dug a little further and fortunately the hospital still had records of the first surgery (by law the hospital does not have to keep records from over twenty years ago). The patient did not have his spleen removed and thus needs neither recurrent vaccinations or ?expensive imaging to figure out the answer. But what if I'd just taken the mistaken word of the second surgeon? How much better if the patient had been given easy?access to his records years ago when he'd first wondered??

Soon, patients will have access to their own charts and will be capable of giving much better histories or better yet, will have their medical stories in their own Personal Health Records. This can save a lot in time and unnecessary tests, not to mention improved accuracy in patient records. Because after all, who has more at stake in the accuracy of the record than the patient? Or as e-Patient Dave deBronkart says:?

Nick Leopard: Wall Street's new 'It' Guy - The Term Sheet: Fortune's ...

Nick Leopard, 32, on the roof of Accordion's office in downtown Manhattan

Nick Leopard, 32, on the roof of Accordion's office in downtown Manhattan

FORTUNE -- Pam Hendrickson needed reinforcements. Recently the chief operating officer of the Riverside Co., a private equity firm that owns more than 80 companies on four continents with combined sales of $3.2 billion, was trying to deliver a five-year budget for all of Riverside's operations. She found herself shorthanded -- one key employee was on maternity leave, another had just left -- and the task required masterful financial modeling skills. In a bind, she turned to Nick Leopard. Says Hendrickson: "Anytime we need analytic help, Nick is my first call."

Leopard, 32, is the CEO of Accordion Partners, a financial services consulting firm that he founded in late 2009. Leopard and his team of 25 bankers act as a sort of rapid-response unit that can drop into a private equity firm or one of its portfolio companies and fix problems of all kinds -- temporarily expanding management's capacity, as the name Accordion suggests. "As much as private equity firms push, the management teams at their portfolio companies often can't build extremely complex forecasts," says Leopard. "So then there are surprises that no one saw coming." Leopard specializes in minimizing those unwanted surprises.

MORE: Private equity's golden hangover

A former lacrosse goalie at Saint Joseph's University, Leopard began his career at the commercial lender CapitalSource (CSE) in 2002 before moving to investment banking at Bear Stearns in 2005. In 2007 he joined the investment team at BHC Interim Funding, a $200 million mezzanine debt fund. Along the way he formed a network of future clients like Providence Equity Partners and Riverside.

As the financial crisis unfolded in 2008, Leopard concluded that Wall Street was going to change: Headcounts would shrink, dealmaking would slow, and buyout firms would have to hold on to portfolio companies longer. He sensed an opportunity. "You could see that the buyout firms were going to get strapped but would still want to give their portfolio companies extra help when the economy slowed," he says. Leopard has purposely kept Accordion's business model flexible. For example, his team can advise on M&A transactions like an investment bank. But unlike a bank, which makes fees on completed deals, Accordion bills strictly for its bankers' time. The firm is paid even if the deal doesn't get done, so there's no built-in incentive to push for a bad transaction.

In September, Accordion launched a new practice called CFO Leadership Services. The idea is to help companies manage investor relations, risk management, compliance, and crisis situations. Leopard says he sees another void in the market in those areas. And he's ready to fill it.

Earth-size Alpha Centauri B planet detected by telltale star wobble

HARPS, as the instrument is called, successfully detected a rocky planet around one of Earth?s closest neighboring stars when other tools missed it.

The instrument astronomers used to discover the small rocky planet circling the star Alpha Centauri B that was announced this week was not a glitzy new high-tech space telescope, but rather a decade-old workhorse attached to a ground observatory in Chile.

HARPS, as the instrument is called, successfully?detected a rocky planet?around one of Earth?s closest neighboring stars when other tools missed it because astronomers have had plenty of time to learn what it is capable of, planet hunter Xavier Dumusque of Geneva Observatory, Switzerland and the Center for Astrophysics at the University of Porto, Portugal, said.

After 10 years of working with HARPS, "we understand much better how the instrument works now," he added.

"And we have used a new strategy to observe the star, which allows us to average the perturbing signals" to eliminate noise.

[App Provides Up-Close Look at Far-Out Exoplanets]

Alpha Centauri Bb, as the new planet is known, has a mass about the same as Earth and is likely rocky. However, unlike Earth, it's likely roasting at 2,200 degrees F (1,204 degrees C) due to how close it is to its parent star.

HARPS, a spectrograph on the European Southern Observatory?s 3.6 meter telescope in La Silla, Chile, works by looking for telltale "wobbles" in a star, caused by an orbiting planet gravitationally tugging on the star. That means that it's much easier to find heavy, Jupiter-like planets than tiny low-mass planets.

"This technique depends on two things," Dumusque said. "The mass of the planet ? the more mass, the easier it is to detect ? and also the distance to the star. In this case, it is a small-mass planet, but it is still very close," which is what made the detection possible.

Even still, the researchers had to deal with interfering signals ? from the star itself.

[Gallery: Nearby Alien Planet Alpha Centauri Bb]

Alpha Centauri B?is one star in a two-star system, but eliminating the noise from the second star was easy, Dumusque said. But the surface activity of Alpha Centauri B itself was enough to throw off instruments. "The surface of the star is not solid. It's very high temperature. It's ... boiling, so you have some bubbles that come up to the surface. These bubbles are [an interfering] signal." Even sunspots ? tangled knots of magnetic activity found on the surface of stars, including our own sun ? can affect HARPS, since the instrument relies on Doppler effects to determine a star's wobbles. A sunspot appearing in view of HARPS can affect the star's perceived redshift and thus trick the instrument into thinking it saw a wobble.

That led to the discovery of the planet, which is "for sure" accompanied by others that scientists haven't yet found, he added. "Statistics show that if you have a very small mass planet in one system, you have other planets in the same system. With this case, with Alpha Centauri B ... we don't have the precision to find them, but for sure there are other planets in the system."

Alpha Cen Bb's gravitational effect on the star causes it to move by just 19.6 inches (50 centimeters) per second. In comparison, if alien observers wanted to discover Earth using the same method, they'd need an instrument that could detect wobbles of 3.9 inches (10 cm) per second. The Espresso instrument, scheduled to go online in 2016, will be able to observe with that precision. "With this instrument, it should be possible to discover Earth's twin," Dumusque said.

Sea lice mob devours pig from the inside out

Sandrine Ceurstemont, editor, New Scientist TV

Finding a dead body in the ocean may be gruesome, but for forensic scientists it can also be perplexing. Although the way a body decomposes on land is well understood, little is known about how human remains fare underwater.

Now a pioneering experiment lead by forensic scientist Gail Anderson from Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada, is using dead pigs as a model for humans to gain insight. In this video, a pig carcass is tracked as it turns to bones in the ocean, capturing the scavengers that visit the body. Sharks are unable to tuck in since it's enclosed (as is the octopus lurking at the end of the video), giving sea lice exclusive access to the remains. They enter orifices in droves to feast on the animal from the inside out and congregate on the cage bars to prevent other arthropods, like shrimp, from getting a bite. "By the end of the fourth day, the sea lice had left and the pigs were reduced to bones," says Anderson.

Shrimp arrive to pick at the skeleton, eventually removing all the cartilage. The team then recovered the bones which, strangely, were jet black for a period of 48 hours. "This is something that has never been seen before," says Lynne Bell, a member of the team. "Colleagues are working to identify the micro-organisms collected close to the bone, which may help to identify the unique chemistry of the change."

The pig carcasses are revealing for the first time how different conditions, for example depth and seasonal changes, affect decomposition in seawater. "We have had a lot of disarticulated feet wash up on our shores in running shoes," says Anderson. "This work is showing the public how crab and shrimp activity can result in severed limbs and that's it's a normal process."

Just in: yet another US orchestra is locked out

Is it not true that what we consider ? music as art ? today was in it?s day, ? music as entertainment ?? The decision as to what is entertainment and what is art seems to lie along the line of what folks are willing to spend their dwindling ? desposable income ? on. As to whether ? the state ? should become the benefactor in support of ? art music ?, isn?t it worth noting that much of the ? art music ? of today was originally underwritten by ? the state ?, or at least members of ? the elite ruling class ??

Two things have happened, in my opinion. Music appreciation courses have been eliminated from school curricula; and managerial salaries have become abusive. As for ? music appreciation ?, I suppose it could be argued that if it is necessary to teach one how/why to appreciate ? art ? then the art has lost its relevancy. But without community outreach ( youth concerts, etc ) where will the next paying audiences come from . . . . and not just paying concert-goers, but citizens within the business community who feel that they should contribute through endowing/underwrtitng their orchestras?

Maybe it?s necessary to pay management salaries which are competitive with other management salaries within the community in order to obtain and retain the kind of talent necessary to perpetuate fiscally sound programs and practices which assure longer-term stability than the lesser-paid managerial staff who see in many cases a launching pad for a greater career? I can sympathize with musicians who, being asked to take pay and benefit concessions, don?t see a similar sacrifice being made on the management end of the stick. Surely this conflict could be handled better in many cases without the musicians yielding to the pressure from unions and guilds to strike? . . . . but then without the conflicts, there wouldn?t be any need for unions, eh?

In order for orchestras to survive, there will necessarily be fewer of them, perhaps becomming regional organizations instead of city-specific. I don?t think private underwriting will be enough for survival, with more dependency on state support ultimately being required. I think there is plenty of room for fresh, creative presentation as opposed to the 100 penguins sitting stiffly on a stage. My instincts tell me that there may be a whole new, visually stimulating video/multi-media universe of performance presentation out there which would excite audiences and encourage new, integrated compositions.

We gotta think out of the box with respect to musician/management relations, AND repertoire/venue presentations!

Airbus may hike A350-1000 output in "mini-jumbo" battle

PARIS (Reuters) - Airbus is looking at increasing planned production for the largest member of its A350 family to power its next important struggle with Boeing for a lucrative corner of the jet market, two people familiar with the matter said.

The plans emerge on the eve of Tuesday's inauguration in Toulouse, southwest France, of an assembly factory for the A350, which is being developed at an estimated cost of $15 billion.

The lightweight carbon-composite aircraft is Airbus's answer to two categories of Boeing long-haul jet: the 787 Dreamliner, which pioneered the large-scale of fuel-saving materials, and the more traditional metallic but still popular 365-seat 777.

The largest variant, the 350-seat A350-1000, will allow Airbus to compete directly with the twin-engined 777 "mini-jumbo". The duel is shaping as the next major aviation battle, with sales of up to 2,000 jets at stake over the next 20 years.

Airbus blames a shortage of delivery slots for slow sales of the A350-1000, which has notched up 88 orders and seen several cancellations since launch, though its U.S. rival claims Airbus was wrong to try to compete in two segments with one plane.

Raising production would free up more slots to be sold.

"Airbus is looking at ways of increasing A350-1000 production," a person familiar with the matter told Reuters.

It was not immediately clear whether this would be at the expense of production for the two smaller models of A350 or mean an increase in total production. There has been speculation the A350-800 could be scaled back to focus on larger models.

A spokeswoman for EADS subsidiary Airbus declined specific comment on production for the A350-1000, but said production for the overall series - officially known as the A350 XWB - was designed to accommodate changes in demand.

"The A350 XWB final assembly line is designed to be flexible and to be able to produce all three members of the A350 family (-800, -900, -1000)," the spokeswoman said by email.

"We are working on a ramp-up to 10 per month to be reached four years after the first A350 XWB delivery and are constantly and closely following market trends so that we anticipate and adapt our production to meet our customers' needs."

At first, Airbus will focus on production of the 314-seat A350-900, the best-selling of all three A350 models and one designed to compete head-to-head with the 787 Dreamliner, which entered regular service in Japan almost exactly a year ago.

First flight is planned for mid-2013 and first delivery for the second half of the following year, suggesting the full production rate will be achieved in late 2018. The first A350-1000 is due in 2017 but it is sold out until late-decade.

MINI-JUMBO MATCH

Airbus is locked in a psychological battle with Boeing over the A350-1000, which was recently beefed up with a more powerful Rolls-Royce engine to improve payload and range.

Boeing produces seven 777s a month and plans to lift this to 8.3 after a record sales streak for the jet, which was extended by a $4.5 billion Turkish Airlines order on Monday.

But even the 777's industry fans acknowledge the 1990s metal design will eventually face headwinds from the A350-1000's lighter design, and Boeing has been toying for months with a 777 revamp that includes less thirsty engines and new wings.

While Boeing is under pressure from top buyers such as Emirates to firm up its plans for the 777X, as the tentative new version is known, Airbus is under pressure to score quick sales of the A350-1000 to recoup lost momentum. It says the plane offers significant savings over the current 777.

After a flurry when the A350 was launched in 2007, sales of the 350-seat A350-1000 went quiet until Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific placed a new order for 10 and upgraded orders for 16 of the smaller A350-900 model in July.

Industry analysts say that as well as pushing new sales, Airbus is actively trying to persuade buyers of its smaller A350-900 to trade up in pursuit of more payload and range, and a further rejigging of the order backlog cannot be ruled out.

On Tuesday, French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault will inaugurate the A350 plant in Toulouse in honor of one the European jetmaker's French founders amid a row over investment.

Germany is withholding half of an estimated 1.2 billion euro A350 development loan to voice unease over jobs.

The ceremony may also be held against a backdrop of fresh trade clashes with the United States, which wants to include the A350 in a long-running transatlantic subsidy dispute.

Washington has been studying European A350 data since last month and trade sources say it could give a response by Tuesday.
