2011 Estoril MotoGP Press Release Previews, Part 3: Factory Yamaha And Aspar Ducati

A couple more press releases from the MotoGP teams previewing the upcoming Estoril round, including words from the winner of the three last editions, Jorge Lorenzo:

YAMAHA FACTORY RACING PREPARE FOR ROUND THREE AS MOTOGP RETURNS TO ESTORIL

26/04/2011

The MotoGP paddock sets up at the Estoril circuit on the Atlantic coast in Portugal this weekend for round three of the World Championship after an extended break. The recent disaster in Japan and subsequent postponement of the Motegi round has resulted in a four week gap between races for Yamaha Factory Racing riders Jorge Lorenzo and Ben Spies.

Reigning MotoGP World Champion and current Championship leader Lorenzo returns to Estoril looking to extend a perfect score sheet from the Portuguese circuit. So far the young Mallorcan has three consecutive pole position starts, race wins and fastest laps, taking nothing less than victory from every Estoril race of his MotoGP career. The later scheduling of the Portuguese race in last year's calendar meant Lorenzo raced at Estoril in 2010 having already been crowned World Champion. He went on to deliver Yamaha's third consecutive Triple Crown that weekend with the help of his then team mate. A flawless performance under treacherous conditions in Jerez last month delivered Lorenzo's first race win of the season, the incident filled first Spanish round leaving most of the competition struggling to stay upright and reach the chequered flag. He arrives at Estoril nine points clear of his closest rival at the top of the Championship standings.

Yamaha Factory Racing rider Ben Spies heads back from his four week break in the USA preparing for his first Estoril MotoGP race. The 2010 round which saw Monsoon weather disrupt qualifying had initially looked positive for the then satellite Texan rider, combined practice times giving him a second row start for the race. An unfortunate high side on the second of two sighting laps however resulted in a dislocated ankle meaning Spies has yet to complete a MotoGP race here and has yet to turn a wheel on a dry Estoril track. The 2010 rookie of the year had been on track for his first podium of the year at Jerez last month. He had been running in second behind his team mate until he joined the many riders to crash out as the changeable track surface took its toll on the worn out rain tyres. Spies arrives in Estoril sitting in 12th in the Championship with ten points.

The Autodromo Fernanda Pires de Silva sits just seven kilometres from the Atlantic coast and as such is notorious for dramatic weather changes; riders can see conditions change in seconds from warm sunshine to high winds and gusts of rain. Estoril provides one of the most challenging circuits for set up, featuring one of the longest straights of the MotoGP calendar combined with the one of the slowest corners. Lorenzo and Spies will need all their rider skills to negotiate the slow twisty sections then hold their nerve for the high speed 200km/hr kink at turn five and the infamous final Parabolica corner leading to the finish line.

Jorge Lorenzo

"This week we will be in Portugal, a country where I've had nice moments! In Estoril I got my first victory in the MotoGP class in 2008 which I repeated over the last two seasons. The track has turned into a talisman for me and it is the place where the astronaut always comes back. We have been training for a month, and I hope that this makes us fit for a good race. We are in front of the standings, but it is very early and it is just the beginning. This week will also be important since we are testing on Monday and we will certainly be able to check a lot of things for the future set-up".

Ben Spies

"Although I've enjoyed the opportunity to head home and get some chill out time in Texas this break has been way to long for me. The team worked really hard over the weekend in Jerez and by race day had delivered a competitive set up that meant we could fight for the podium. Unfortunately it wasn't to be. I really enjoyed the first practice sessions here last year and was frustrated to have not made the race, I can't wait to get started on Friday morning and see what we can do."

Wilco Zeelenberg

"It seems like Jerez was last year, not the last round! It's a bit strange to have such a long time away from the track during the season but of course we all know the reason. We are really looking forward to Estoril, with the position we have and knowing Jorge is strong here we think he can do a good job and compete for the podium again. It's early in the season and our competitors have made big advances from last year but we are again fighting for the championship."

Massimo Meregalli

"Estoril is a good circuit for Yamaha, it's one of the favourite tracks for Jorge and he always gets good results here, as have other Yamaha Factory riders in the past. Despite not finishing the race at Jerez Ben showed he had the potential to finish on the podium so comes here looking to step forward again. Estoril has extra significance as we secured our Triple Crown for the third consecutive time here last year. We are confident that in the 50th year of Yamaha's involvement in Grand Prix racing we can continue our tradition of success in Portugal."

MotoGP World Championship 2011 - Grand Prix of Portugal - MotoGP Preview

MOTOGP FIRES UP AGAIN AFTER THREE-WEEK BREAK

MAPFRE Aspar rider H?ctor Barber? looks to build on Jerez sixth place at Estoril

The MotoGP World Championship resumes this weekend at Estoril following a three-week break since the last round at Jerez. The series stays on the Iberian peninsular with a short trip to Portugal, which should ensure a strong Spanish following in the local crowd. The event was hit by heavy rain last year, leading to the cancellation of qualifying on Saturday, and although Estoril is pehaps mainly known for its fickle weather the circuit itself has excellent characteristics within its 4,182m layout. A mixture of fast and slow corners and some dramatic elevation changes, as well as a main straight measuring almost a kilometre in length, make it a demanding proposition for the riders.

H?ctor Barber? emerged unscathed from a bruising race at Jerez last time out, picking up a highly creditable sixth place to boot. Whilst other riders fell around him the MAPFRE Aspar rider stayed upright in a confidence-inspiring performance that leaves him optimistic about the next challenge at Estoril. The Spaniard is confident that the Estoril circuit suits his style and is therefore looking forward to another good weekend. Last year he finished tenth in this race and he is hoping for more this time around.

biography

H?ctor Barber?: "The objective in Portugal is to improve the way we work during practice. Above all we want to improve the set-up of my Ducati with our focus on the race, like we did at Jerez. We want to line up on the grid with the best possible pace and fully aware of our potential. Estoril is a circuit that is usually kind to me and I have great memories. I was fourth for a few laps in my first season but I crashed because of a wet track and then the following year I won. I usually get to grips with it quite quickly so I hope that's the case again this weekend. I have prepared well over the last few weeks and I am looking forward to it."

'The Voice' Opens Big

Courtesy of NBC Universal

The Voice kicked off on a high note Tuesday night.

The Mark Burnett-produced singing competition improved NBC?s season average in the time period by 89 percent. With a 5.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 11.8 million viewers overall, it is the top-rated series premiere on a major network since CBS? Undercover Boss debut following the 2010 Super Bowl.

The Voice?-- which features Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton ? was the No. 1 show of the night out-rating ABC?s Dancing with the Stars and a new 90-minute Lady Gaga episode of Glee. In head-to-head competition, The Voice bested Glee 4.6 vs. 3.4 (from 9-9:30) and Dancing With the Stars 4.9 vs. 3.5 (from 9-10 p.m.).

The Voice boosted NBC to a rare ratings win for the night. The network averaged a 4.3 in the demo with 10.3 million viewers overall, followed by Fox (3.0, 7.5 million), ABC (2.7, 14.3 million) and CBS (1.9, 9.7 million), which aired reruns.?

Despite heavy promotion for its Gaga episode, Glee (3.4, 8.5 million) was down 11 percent week-to-week for a season low and Raising Hope (1.9, 4.5 million) was down 10 percent for a series low.?

A Dancing with the Stars recap special (2.4, 12.8 million) at 8 p.m. propelling the DWTS results show (3.5, 17.9 million), which posted a 17 percent uptick. Facing tough competition in the 10 p.m. time slot from the second hour of The Voice, Body of Proof (2.3, 12 million) was down four percent for a series low.

Crowds Cheer As Pope Beatifies John Paul

Pope Benedict XVI beatified Pope John Paul II before more than a million faithful in St. Peter's Square and surrounding streets Sunday, moving the beloved former pontiff one step closer to possible sainthood.

The crowd in Rome and in capitals around the world erupted in cheers, tears and applause as an enormous photo of a young, smiling John Paul was unveiled over the loggia of St. Peter's Basilica and a choir launched into hymn long associated with the Polish-born pope.

"He restored to Christianity its true face as a religion of hope," Benedict said in his homily, which was dotted with personal recollections of a man Benedict said he came to "revere" during their near-quarter century working together.

Beatification is the first major milestone on the path to possible sainthood, one of the Catholic Church's highest honors. A second miracle attributed to John Paul's intercession is needed for him to be canonized.

The beatification, the fastest in modern times, is a morale boost for a church scarred by the sex abuse crisis, but it has also triggered a new wave of anger from victims because the scandal occurred under John Paul's 27-year watch.

Police placed wide swaths of Rome even miles (kilometers) from the Vatican off limits to private cars to ensure security for the estimated 16 heads of state, seven prime ministers and five members of European royal houses attending.

Spain's Crown Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia, wearing a black lace mantilla, mingled with Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi, Poland's historic Solidarity leader and former President Lech Walesa and Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, who sidestepped an EU travel ban to attend.

"He went all over the world," said Bishop Jean Zerbo of Bamako, Mali, who came to Rome for the ceremony. "Today, we're coming to him."

Benedict put John Paul on the fast-track for possible sainthood when he dispensed with the traditional five-year waiting period and allowed the beatification process to begin weeks after his April 2, 2005, death. Benedict was responding to chants of "Santo Subito!" or "Sainthood Immediately" which erupted during John Paul's funeral.

On Sunday, a group of pilgrims from Krakow affixed a banner to a fence outside the square that says "Santo Subito," evidence that for many of the faithful, John Paul already is a saint.

"John Paul was a wonderful man and it's a privilege to be here. It's wonderful to see people from all across the world," said Anne Honiball, 48, a nursing home administrator from Worthing, England who carried a small Union Jack flag.

"We missed the royal wedding but we are Catholics and this was a bit more important, I suppose," said Honibal, a former Protestant who converted to Catholicism 10 years ago.

Around the world, Catholics celebrated the beatification, jamming churches from Mexico to Australia to pray and watch broadcasts of the Rome Mass on television.

"He was a model and an inspiration who united the world with his extraordinary charisma," said John Paul Bustillo, a 16-year-old medical student named after the pontiff who turned out Sunday along with more than 3,000 for a six-mile (10-kilometer) race followed by a Mass near Manila Bay in the Philippines.

In John Paul's native Poland, tens of thousands of people gathered in rain in a major sanctuary in Krakow and in Wadowice, where the pontiff was born in 1920 as Karol Wojtyla. Prime Minister Donald Tusk and his wife Malgorzata watched the ceremony together with Wadowice residents.

"I wonder what we would have been like and what would not have happened if we had not had our pope," the PAP agency quoted Tusk as saying. "All that good that we all have received is still working."

Speaking in Latin, Benedict pronounced John Paul "Blessed" shortly after the start of the Mass, held under bright blue skies and amid a sea of Poland's red and white flags ? a scene reminiscent of John Paul's 2005 funeral, when some 3 million people paid homage to the pope.

Benedict recalled that day six years ago, saying the grief the world felt then was tempered by immense gratitude for his life and pontificate.

"Even then, we perceived the fragrance of his sanctity," Benedict said, explaining the "reasonable haste" with which John Paul was being honored.

Benedict said that through John Paul's faith, courage and strength ? "the strength of a titan, a strength which came to him from God" ? John Paul had turned back the seemingly "irreversible" tide of Marxism.

"He rightly reclaimed for Christianity that impulse of hope which had in some sense faltered before Marxism and the ideology of progress," Benedict said.

Police, government officials and the Vatican all put the figure of those attending the Mass at over a million; only a few hundred thousand could fit into St. Peter's Square and the surrounding streets but others watched it on some of the 14 huge TV screens set up around town or listened to it on radios in Polish or Italian.

"I am disappointed but also happy to be here for the atmosphere," said Boleslaw Wisniewski, 83, who came with five members of his family by bus from Warsaw. He stood listening to the music drifting over the packed crowd, but could see nothing.

"He's our holy father ? a Pole ? and we are proud," he said.

During the Mass, Benedict received a silver reliquary holding a vial of blood taken from John Paul during his final hosptalization. The relic, a key feature of beatification ceremonies, will be available for the faithful to venerate.

It was presented to him by Sister Tobiana, the Polish nun who tended to John Paul throughout his pontificate, and Sister Marie Simone-Pierre of France, whose inexplicable recovery from Parkinson's disease was decreed to be the miracle necessary for John Paul to be beatified.

Helicopters flew overhead, police boats patrolled the nearby Tiber River and some 5,000 uniformed troops patrolled police barricades to ensure priests, official delegations and those with coveted VIP passes could get to their places.

Thousands of pilgrims, many of them from John Paul's native Poland, spent the night in sleeping bags on bridges and in piazzas around town, and then packed St. Peter's as soon as the barricades opened over an hour in advance because the crowds were too great.

They stood shoulder-to-shoulder on the main boulevard leading to the Vatican, Via della Conciliazione, as well as on side streets around it and the bridges crossing the Tiber leading to St. Peter's.

It's the fastest beatification on record, coming just six years after John Paul died and beating out the beatification of Mother Teresa by a few days.

The beatification ceremonies kicked off officially with a all-night prayer vigil that began on Rome's ancient Circus Maximus field and continued as pilgrims spent the night moving around eight churches that stayed open all night, a "white night" of prayer in honor of the late pope.

"The weather is mild and so it will not be a problem to pass the night here, and there is also a very nice atmosphere," said Pauline Rosenfeld, a 20-year-old pilgrim from Paris sitting with friends in her sleeping bag gearing up for a night spent outdoors.

The beatification is taking place despite a drumbeat of criticism about the record speed with which John Paul is being honored, and continued outrage about clerical abuse: Many of the crimes and cover-ups of priests who raped children occurred on John Paul's 27-year watch.

Vatican officials have insisted that John Paul deserves beatification despite the fallout from the abuse scandal, saying the saint-making process isn't a judgment of how he administered the church but rather whether he lived a life of Christian virtue.

But victims' groups such as the U.S. Survivors Network for Those Abused by Priests have said the speedy beatification was just "rubbing more salt in these wounds" of victims.

Rome itself seemed invaded by Poles overjoyed that their native son was being honored. Special trains, planes and buses shuttled Poles in for the beatification.

Anna Fotyga, a former Polish foreign minister and member of Poland's parliament, arrived on a special train Sunday morning carrying the Polish parliamentary delegation. She reminisced about John Paul's impact on communist Poland in the late 1970s and 80s.

"I was a student at that time, and actually seeing him, listening to him started transformation in Poland, I am sure," she said.

The "16 & Pregnant" mom accused of punching her baby daddy in the face says the guy totally LIED to police ... claiming Josh Smith punched HIMSELF in an effort to set her up.

TMZ spoke with 17-year-old Jennifer Del Rio ... who told us she was driving Josh home from a job interview Monday when he took one of their twins out of the car seat ... and asked if he could take the kid for the night.

Jennifer says she denied his request -- and tried to take back the kid -- when the baby started to cry. Jennifer says she screamed at 19-year-old Josh, "Give me back my kid. You?re hurting him."

Jennifer says a struggle ensued and she was pushed into a fence -- so she called the cops.

Josh went into his house for a few minutes, says Jennifer, and when he returned, he had a bloody nose and his shirt was ripped.

Jennifer says Josh told her that he ALSO called the cops because it was ?her turn to go to jail? ... insisting he was out for ?payback? from an incident back in November when he was arrested for attacking her.

When cops arrived to the scene, Jennifer says Josh ?lied to the cops" when he told them Jennifer attacked him. Neither Jennifer nor Josh was arrested over the incident.?

However, Jennifer tells us she plans on pressing charges for child endangerment and wants to obtain a restraining order against Josh as soon as possible.

The Beauty Of 'The Beauty Of Humanity Movement'

A novel from Camilla Gibb titled "The Beauty of Humanity Movement" explores a short-lived art movement that flowered in Vietnam during the 1950s. Alan Cheuse teaches writing at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va.

Copyright ? 2011 National Public Radio?. For personal, noncommercial use only. See Terms of Use. For other uses, prior permission required.

MELISSA BLOCK, host:

Vietnam has provided a rich backdrop for countless works of fiction. Those books often focus on soldiers, war and its aftermath. Well, a new novel by Camilla Gibb called "The Beauty of Humanity Movement" takes a very different approach, and reviewer Alan Cheuse thinks it's a good one.

ALAN CHEUSE: Gibb has made a loving, wise, tender, dreamy and insightful work of fiction about a loosely linked group of ordinary citizens trying to make the most in contemporary Hanoi.

Old Man Hung, the main character, is an aging survivor of the anti-French movement of the 1950s and one of the few remaining witnesses to a short-lived art movement that came after the Vietnamese victory over the French, an art movement with an aesthetic, rather than a political, bent.

Hung now rides about the sprawling, noisy, dangerous, slum-filled city on his rickety bike, setting up an illegal pho shop every day, often changing locations, selling this savory meat and vegetable soup with which everyone wants to start their morning.

His own day seems almost over, and the great love of his life well lost until the appearance of a Viet Kieu, a Vietnamese-American woman named Maggie.

Maggie is an art historian in search of traces of the work of her late father, an expatriate illustrator who returned from America after the victory over the French and joined that dissonant art movement.

A lot of recent history comes alive in this delightful novel. That's Camilla Gibb's strong suite, that she can deftly invent characters foreign to us who represent various historical turns yet make us feel their reality - their humanity is how she of course would put it, even as they go lurching or marching or, as in Old Man Hung's case, wobbling toward their destinies.

BLOCK: The book is "The Beauty of Humanity Movement" by Camilla Gibb. Alan Cheuse teaches writing at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. His latest novel is called "Songs of Slaves in the Desert."

'Jersey Shore' Star The Situation Inks Development Deal With MTV

The Situation is the latest Jersey Shore cast member to sign development deals with MTV, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Mike Sorrentino, better known as The Situation, has inked a pact with the cable network for a potential series. Sorrentino is not attached to a specific project at the moment, but a pilot presentation will be filmed later this year for a possible series pickup.

This comes after the cable network greenlit two untitled?Jersey Shore spinoff series: one features Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi and Jenni "JWoww" Farley, while the second is led by Paul "DJ Pauly D" Delvecchio. Both shows, expected to bow some time in 2012, center on the trio's lives away from Jersey Shore.

MTV exec Chris Linn?told THR in an interview the same day the pickups were announced, that the spinoffs will not dilute the franchise. "I think it allows us to expand out from the base of Jersey Shore without taking away from what Jersey Shore is. They would continue to be involved in any potential future cycles of Jersey Shore," Linn reassured at the time.

Jersey Shore is MTV's top-rated series of all-time; its third season averaged a 7.7 rating in the persons 12-34 demographic, up drastically from the first two seasons.
